Recap / DEATH BATTLE! S07E11 - Beerus VS Sailor Galaxia

Go To

Wiz: Everything that lives must die. Everything that is created must be destroyed. So sayeth these vanguards of the apocalypse.
Boomstick: Badass! But... why've they gotta be a golden ballerina and a purple cat?
Wiz: Lord Beerus, Dragon Ball's almighty God of Destruction...
Boomstick: ...and Empress Galaxia, the Sailor Scout of Destruction from Sailor Moon.

Opening the second half of the season, two of the most revered anime franchises take to the stage, bringing with them destroyers of worlds and all that lie beyond. Two different types of destruction powers meet and those that possess it, Lord Beerus and Sailor Galaxia, will need every ounce of that power and more by the time they are forced into a death battle.

The first combatant covered is Lord Beerus, one of many deities scattered across the multiverse. Every universe has a God of Destruction watching over it; their role, to purge their universe of that which has become old, paving the way for new life. Where Universe 7, home to famed heroes such as Son Goku, is concerned, the role of God of Destruction falls into the hands of the felid Lord Beerus. Much of this destroyer's origins remain shrouded in mystery, but to attain his position, Beerus trained for millions of years under the tutelage of the angel Whis. Whis continued his duties as Beerus's mentor, and, after he became Universe 7's God of Destruction, his personal assistant. Due to his nearly unrivaled power as the God of Destruction, Beerus has a tendency to shirk the tasks that come with the role. Instead, Beerus spends his time napping, gorging himself, and indulging in other behaviors typical of cats. It took Whis informing Beerus of rumors regarding a Super Saiyan God capable of matching his strength to spark interest in the God of Destruction. Thankfully for the world, Goku was able to live up to these rumors and tap into this fabled form to quell Beerus's urge for battle, with the fate of the world at stake. Since sparing the Earth after that showdown, Beerus has become something of an ally to Goku and friends, seeing in them the potential to become even greater warriors than they already are.

As the God of Destruction, Beerus has a reputation to match his responsibilities, and indeed, he does live up to it. The keystone of Beerus's many fantastic abilities is an energy source known as ki, drawn from one's own life force. Standard ki is versatile and can be shaped into several forms, but there is a finite amount that can be used; in comparison, ki drawn by gods is much more powerful, and the corresponding reserves are similarly of a more expansive state. Beerus is able to channel the latter into various spheres and rays; one example, a barrage of orbs that covers his entire field of vision known as the God of Destruction's Wrath, is a common standby in Beerus's arsenal. For defensive means, Beerus can use godly ki to absorb the energy attacks of others. The God of Destruction is no stranger to close-quarters combat either, as by training with Whis, Beerus gained a similar proficiency in unarmed martial arts. The targeting of pressure points is central to Beerus's physical fighting style courtesy of Whis's teachings, and from Whis, the God of Destruction was also able to master the secrets of Ultra Instinct. More specifically, the Autonomous Ultra Instinct allows Beerus to instinctively avoid incoming attacks under its effects. Powerful as these techniques and attacks may be, it is the purple ki unique to a God of Destruction that acts as the source of their most devastating ability: the hakai. When using a hakai, Gods of Destruction such as Beerus use their ki's latent destructive energy to utterly obliterate a target, body and soul alike.

Beerus may serve as an intimidating foe, but even a god must have his limits. The best way to survive exposure to a hakai is to be as strong as the God of Destruction using it, proving that its effects are not absolute. Similarly, his reserves of godly ki, while far higher than that of mortals, is still limited. That said, the showings of might Beerus has demonstrated far outshine his shortcomings. The feline destroyer can fly between galaxies in minutes under his own power, and with the aid of Ultra Instinct, he can react to surprise attacks from several other Gods of Destruction. One of these Gods was his brother, Universe 6's Champa, who nearly destroyed Universe 7 as collateral damage during a different showdown between him and Beerus. This would not be the last time such a threat was faced by the universe, as Beerus's battle with the Super Saiyan God-empowered Goku exposed the entirety of Universe 7 to shockwaves of energy formed from the battle. Impressive in theory, but the intricacies of Dragon Ball cosmology gives the already-imposing scale of this feat more weight. What the franchise's setting considers a universe is in fact a macroverse; essentially a set of universes inside of a larger connective dimension, which the setting's more conventional universe is only a part of. The shockwaves emanating from the battle reached the rest of the Universe 7 macrocosm at a rate surpassing light-speed 240 quadrillion times over, and logically, Beerus would need a similarly tremendous amount of physical stamina to be at the epicenter of such shockwaves. While he may possess the indolence of felines taken to an utmost extreme, these demonstrations of his power prove Beerus also embodies their cunning in equal measure, making for a worthy bearer of the title God of Destruction.

Beerus: We're happy to see you're finally realizing the full terror of Beerus the destroyer.

Finished with Beerus, the episode then discusses Sailor Galaxia, one of the strongest Sailor Scouts populating the galaxy and undoubtedly the most vile. Once a nobody eking out a living on a trash heap of a planet, the woman who would become Galaxia was driven to suicidal despair from her abysmal conditions. When the ancient Sapphire Crystal awoke latent powers within her, she embraced these powers and adopted the title of Sailor Galaxia. Emboldened by the crystal, the megalomaniacal Sailor Scout took to finding a new planet to call home. Her travels across the cosmos saw her arrogance grow while she steadily learned of a primordial evil called Chaos; Galaxia also learned of the Sailor Scout said to be its opposite. Thus, as she conquered and destroyed worlds to expand her Shadow Galactica empire, she made it a point to wipe out both and ensure her rule over the cosmos would be absolute. Usagi Tsukino, Sailor Moon, the heroine said to embody all that is good, and her fellow Sailor Scouts would be thrust into conflict with Shadow Galactica and its queen, the last and greatest threat to the universe Usagi and friends have ever faced.

Galaxia undoubtedly makes for an unnerving threat, thanks in part to the powers granted unto every Sailor Scout, herself included. Everything in the universe is fueled by crystals known as star seeds; every celestial body's star seed is a more developed Sailor Crystal, with a corresponding Sailor Scout that draws her power from it. A Sailor Crystal gives its Scout a plethora of abilities while she actively channels its energy; flight, accelerated healing, a limitless supply of energy, immortality, and shapeshifting are all amongst said abilities. While all of these at Galaxia's disposal, there are several other powers exclusive to her, the Sapphire Crystal, and the bracelets on her wrists that channel its energy. Teleportation and electrokinesis are two such skills, as is manipulating others by directly controlling their star seeds. Galaxia can manipulate dark energy, another power unique to her, and redirect it in various forms, such as whips and energy fields. Above all else, however, Galaxia has one final ace to ensure her dominance should the situation require it: directing dark energy to wipe her victims from existence. Be it a person or a planet, anything subjected to this destruction technique is certain to be obliterated, star seed and all.

It is for good reason that Galaxia is feared as the most powerful of the Sailor Scouts. By her own strength, Galaxia can produce magic attacks that can be seen from other galaxies. By comparing her with Sailor Moon, whose Eternal form Galaxia fought on even ground, the Sailor of Destruction is on par with a Sailor Scout whose attacks can reach the farthest expanses of the galaxy in seconds and annihilate entire mirror universes. It was through this strength that she posed more of a threat to the Sailor Scouts than Shadow Galactica, wiping out Usagi's allies while preparing for a final battle with Sailor Moon herself. From here, the fate of Galaxia takes different turns depending on the story. In some tellings, Galaxia has a change of heart and attempts to absorb Chaos into herself, only to instead be consumed by its evil; in others, Usagi shares her goodness and love with Galaxia, and this kindness leads to the galactic empress questioning her own motives. Unfortunately, Usagi's benevolence would shatter the Sapphire Crystal, taking Galaxia with it. Though she may never have truly known peace in her passing, what is certain is that the legacy Galaxia left behind is also one that will forever impact the order of Sailor Scouts and the universe at large.

Sailor Galaxia: (possessed by the negative energies of Chaos) This mind belongs to Sailor Galaxia, the most powerful guardian in the galaxy!

Both cosmic destroyers, fully studied and prepared, are finally ready for action. One advertisement for Raycon earbuds later, and now, it's time for a death battle!

On the beaches of Earth, Lord Beerus happily lounges about with an ice cream cone in hand. As he takes in the tranquility of his surroundings, Sailor Galaxia looks at the planet from the void around it. The rogue Sailor Scout's mere gesticulation causes the world to blow up as she revels in her wanton destruction. Her own mirth is briefly interrupted by the God of Destruction appearing from behind her, chastising her for ruining his treat. Chortling anew, Galaxia boasts of her power to Beerus, plunging her fingertips towards the god's eyes and blasting him backward. What follows is shock and agitation on the Sailor Scout's part as Beerus seemingly appears before her, none the worse for wear, and takes her attack for the challenge that it is.

FIGHT!

Beerus thrust a hand forward, only for the Sailor of Destruction to soar behind him. Once more does Galaxia shove her fingers in the feline's face, and once more does Beerus become annoyed with his foe. With a backhanded fist to gain distance, the two cosmic destroyers engage in a poking duel, blocking their opponent's jabbing digits with their own. Fingertips eventually collide with enough energy to sending the pair flying apart; they take this time to address the toil this fight has already taken, shaking the stress out their strained arms. The fighters prepare their strongest attacks once they regain their composure. Galaxia points forward once more, Beerus holds forth an opened palm. Destruction energy and a hakai fill the space surrounding them, but the only casualties are the surrounding asteroids. The God of Destruction takes an increasing interest in his opponent as he flies towards the Sailor Scout. An orb of godly ki closes in on Galaxia, but holding her bracelets before her, the energy is kept from impact. Instead, the Sapphire Crystal's bearer amplifies the orb with her own energy and redirected it back to the deity of Universe 7.

The ensuing explosion gives the Sailor of Destruction enough time to unfurl a golden whip from her bracelets. Beerus, having recovered from the attack, effortlessly evades every lash of Galactica Super String before getting into position to fire off the God of Destruction's Wrath. Galaxia, while struggling at first to navigate the ensuing ki bombardment, teleports out the blasts and repositions herself behind Beerus, still unaware his foe is safely away. Conjuring an enormous sphere of dark energy above the God of Destruction, the Sailor Scout directs it to blast Beerus with a thunderbolt that sends him into a second sphere. Beerus quickly nullifies the energy, then appears before Galaxia and slams a fist into her waist. Galaxia teleports away from a second punch, rematerializes in the distance, and ensnares Beerus's tail in the Galactica Super String. Set to the God of Destruction's agonized yowling, the Sailor Scout flings Beerus into the sun that the Earth used to orbit. Cloaking herself in dark energy, the Sailor of Destruction uses the cover provided by the Galactica Inflation to fly towards the star right as Beerus flies out; the feline god condenses his destroyer ki into a ball rivaling the sun in size.

As the Sailor of Destruction reaches the celestial body, Beerus's ki forces the sun to go supernova. The Galactica Inflation continues to shield its queen as she and Beerus exchange a series of lasers, each blaming the other for the sun's destruction. By the time they meet in the star's core, their collision blasts the pair to neighboring world. Galaxia uses this lull in the fight to satisfy her ego through the local population, while Beerus leaves nothing but dust in his wake as he re-enters the cosmos. Vast curtains of purple and gold chase the cosmic destroyers, overtaking the space around them once they face each other in front of the supernova. The sheer energy exerted by the pair destroys the other planet while the sun finally collapses into a black hole. This stalemate between the fighters is broken once the Sailor of Destruction entwines Beerus in cosmic rope. The God of Destruction is flung towards the void, magic bolts pelting him further. Before he reaches the event horizon, Beerus concentrates his godly ki into himself, destroying his bindings as a white aura envelops him.

The Ultra Instinct allows Beerus to keep pace with Galaxia, catching her in a chain of attacks both physical and verbal. The Sailor Scout is quicker to brush off Beerus's claims, firing a ray of magic that pierces the cat's ki blast. Its flight uninterrupted, the ray drives itself through Beerus, before being smothered in a yellow flare. The God of Destruction's star seed emerges from the aether, and after a brief display of surprise, Beerus catches the cosmic crystal. Defiant, if also aghast, Galaxia leaves her guard down, only putting them up before a ray of ki pushes her steadily towards the singularity. With a final beam, Galaxia is overwhelmed by the God of Destruction's greater might; her bracelets shatter, her arms are blasted from their sockets, and barely a moment goes by before the rest of her body is reduced into fragments that the black hole consumes. Watching as the remains of Sailor Scout fall to oblivion, Beerus declares his ice cream as having been avenged.

K.O.!

In the aftermath of the fight, all the elements are laid out so as to clarify Galaxia's loss. To give the Sailor of Destruction her due, it is stated that she had an advantage in versatility, as her wider array of techniques would keep pace with Beerus and her galaxy-spanning attacks are faster than those of Beerus. Her Sapphire Crystal would also have been a source of infinite energy, compared to Beerus's ki reserves being immense, but still limited. Anything else, however, she would either match Beerus in or be exceeded by. Galaxia's destruction magic and Beerus's hakai would likely be ineffective against one another, due to their experiences with such power. While Beerus may have been slower than Galaxia, the God of Destruction's usage of Autonomous Ultra Instinct would help close the speed gap. While Beerus may not have had as wide a skillset as his foe, what he did possess provided suitable counters; his energy absorption negated most of Galaxia's arsenal, and any of Galaxia's entrapment techniques could be broken through sheer force. Beerus also had advantages in experience and training, giving him better-refined skills in comparison to Galaxia. The true tipping point in this fight, however, comes down to both parties' offensive and defensive capabilities. The mirror universe Usagi destroyed is stated to be a similar size to that of the real world's universe, roughly nine times smaller than the macrocosm that is Universe 7. However, at a later point in Usagi's adventures, she was able to best eight of Galaxia's Sailor Scout minions who were at a similar level of power. The highest possible estimate gives Sailor Moon when she fought Galaxia, and by extension Galaxia herself, enough strength to destroy the universe eight times over. In comparison, the clash that Beerus had with Super Saiyan God Goku only occurred under sub-optimal conditions for both parties; Beerus was only using a fraction of his full strength, which was also Goku's first time in the Super Saiyan God form, thus limiting his experience. Similar to Usagi, Goku later attained the form of Super Saiyan God Blue, far stronger than the standard Super Saiyan God form, and still was considered inferior to Beerus. Even when giving Galaxia the most generous possible advantage and overestimating her maximum damage output while doing the reverse for Beerus, the God of Destruction was well beyond Galaxia's maximum power output. The Sailor of Destruction, to summarize, had speed and versatility on her side, but against the sheer physicality and precision like that of Beerus, those could only take her so far.

Boomstick: You could say she got caught in a Galaxi-sized cat-astrophe. [...]
Wiz: The winner is Lord Beerus!

Next time on Death Battle...

Beerus vs. Sailor Galaxia contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Invoked. Wiz and Boomstick mention that even if you apply this to Galaxia and ramp her up a lot, Beerus' on-screen feats still make him more powerful.
  • Adaptational Heroism: The show discusses how in the anime made Galaxia more heroic by trying to contain Chaos (getting corrupted by it), when in the manga, she was just evil.
  • Asteroid Thicket: Galaxia's destruction of the world Beerus is relaxing on creates one. It gets blown away by a Beam-O-War of Destruction Energies between the combatants.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the tail end of the fight, Sailor Galaxia successfully manages to pierce Beerus and extract his Star Seed. It appears that she has won... until Beerus' expression turns to a glare and he quickly grabs the Star Seed, shocking Galaxia and setting her up for his finishing blows.
  • The Cameo: The planets that both combatants land on feature inhabitants modeled after the villagers of Twilight Town from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
  • Cats Are Mean: Obviously Beerus, but Boomstick holds this as a personal belief based on his ex-wife's cat. He claims that Usagi being trained by one is a sign of how dangerous Usagi is.
  • The Dreaded: One of the details mentioned about Galaxia is that planets have betrayed their Sailor Scouts to prevent their own destruction against Galaxia.
  • Dub Name Change: The inconsistency of the original Sailor Moon dub is discussed for about the first whole minute of Galaxia's bio.
  • Embarrassing Slide: While showing off the wonky names of Galaxia's special techniques, the screen behind the hosts displays heavily pixellated images upon reaching her Galaxia Inflation technique; it's implied to be some sort of fetish porn between Wiz covering the screen and his desperate attempts to save face.
  • Evil Is Petty: There doesn't seem to be a real reason that Galaxia blew up the planet Beerus was on, just that it happened to be there and it amused her. Beerus isn't much better, though- see Lost Food Grievance for details.
  • Evil vs. Evil: A fight between a Jerkass God of Destruction and an Omnicidal Maniac hellbent on universal conquest. Leans towards Black-and-Gray Morality, though, since Beerus is an Affably Evil Punch-Clock Villain.
  • Failed a Spot Check: While Beerus is performing a Beam Spam, Galaxia manages to teleport behind him and drop a planet-sized blast of energy on top of him. Beerus doesn't notice until he's being smacked by the ball.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The constellations of Chuck Norris and Segata Sanshiro, still in their eternal duel, can be briefly seen after Galaxia and Beerus use their respective Cessation of Existence attacks to clear the battlefield.
  • Hero Killer: The hosts don't shy away from pointing out that Galaxia has personally killed multiple Sailor Guardians, including fan-favorite ones.
  • I Am the Noun: Beerus gives one as a Pre-Mortem One-Liner, using "Impossible" in place of "Noun."
  • Insane Troll Logic: Popeye is a sailor, and Girl Scouts sell cookies; so, by Boomstick logic, Sailor Scouts, sharing their title with both, are supposed to be a horde of cookie-peddling space Popeyes.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Both may be Persons Of Mass Destruction, but Beerus is overall the less evil of the two, as he's a Punch-Clock Villain minding his own business whilst Galaxia is an unrepentant Omnicidal Maniac who instigated the fight. Ultimately, Beerus comes out on top.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Galaxia blowing up Earth, and the ice cream Beerus was enjoying by extension, is what kicks off the whole fight. After blasting Galaxia to bits and shunting her remains into a black hole, he claims his victory in the name of said ice cream. This is in keeping with Beerus' actual motivations- both in the Super anime and in the film Battle of Gods, he started his rampage anew after being denied pudding.
  • Made of Indestructium: Implied. One of Wiz' containers is wholly capable of containing Beerus' Hakai energy without being erased from existence, which is something that even Zamasu, a god, wasn't capable of.
  • Musical Nod: The ending of the fight features Ominous Latin Chanting as Beerus disposes of Galaxia as a throwback to the chanting (the song is called "Beerus' Madness") featured in Super from his use of the hakai on Zamasu.
  • No-Sell: Since both sides have experience with the energy of Destruction, these energies do not work on either Galaxia or Beerus, and thus attacks using this don't work either.
    • One of Beerus' selling points is his ability to absorb energy attacks.
    • At the end of the battle, Beerus manages to pull this off regarding the removal of his Star Seed.
    • Similarly, at one point Galaxia catches one of Beerus' attacks and throws it back at him.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: A battle between two of anime's biggest people of mass destruction. To note, Galaxia blowing up the Earth isn't even a deliberate attack; she just offed a planet for her own amusement and happened to pick the one Beerus was chilling on.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Beerus, in response to Galaxia declaring that "This is impossible," tells her "I AM The Impossible!" And then kills her.
  • Strong and Skilled: what allows Beerus to eke out a win. Not only does Beerus have the ability to destroy a universe nine times the size of the one in real life, he's spent millions of years training with Whis, who's stronger than even a God is. With attacks that are stronger and more refined, Beerus forces Galaxia to take a fall.
    • However, it's not as if that was a trait unique to Beerus. What allowed the fight to last as long as it did was that Galaxia was notably faster than the God, and was able to pull on a greater variety of techniques to keep the cat off balance. It's even stated that her "Infinite Energy" would mean that she could theoretically outlast Beerus, as his power was great, but limited.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Beerus grabs his own Star Seed after Galaxia removed it, which should have put him under her control, she can just say a shocked "What?! That's... impossible!"
Beerus: Now you're catching on. I AM THE IMPOSSIBLE!
  • Tranquil Fury: Beerus, in comparison to Galaxia, barely raises his voice during the fight, only doing so towards the end.
  • We Have Reserves: This episode introduces the Disposable Unit for Meticulous Matchup Investigations, or DUMMI. Wiz isn't shy about obliterating one such DUMMI with hakai energy, outright admitting they're not lacking in numbers.
  • Willfully Weak: Beerus is capable of replicating some of Galaxia's greatest feats while he was holding back in his home series, as seen in Battle of Gods and early on in Super. It's what helps the hosts decide that Beerus would come out on top.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: Boomstick asks this when they talk about how Galaxia was killed when Usagi showed her kindness.
