Recap / Darkwing Duck S 3 E 10 Clash Reunion

Go To

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When he gained his power, Megavolt realized he could get revenge on those who tormented him, who made him a freak, and who gave him his poor hairstyle.
  • Bill... Bill... Junk... Bill...: Drake, when going through his mail. At one point, he notices something from "Ed McMallard". This is a reference to Ed McMahon, who, besides being Johnny Carson's sidekick, was also, at the time, the spokesman for American Family Publishers. (Not, contrary to popular belief, Publishers Clearing House.)
  • Delusions of Local Grandeur: Darkwing believes that he was cool when he was in high school instead of being Drake the Dweeb.
  • Even Nerds Have Standards: As a teen, Drake Mallard was picked on by everybody, including Elmo Sputterspark, the science nerd.
  • Forgetful Jones: Megavolt's memory is really bad in this episode. He forgets a lot of very basic things, including what he is, Darkwing's secret identity, and even what cartoon he's in!
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: Megavolt mistakes himself for a Scooby-Doo villain and corrects himself by admitting it was the wrong cartoon.
  • The Ghost: Megavolt says he'll have to thank Dr. Slug for loaning him the glue warehouse hideout for the weekend.
  • Heroic BSoD: Unmasked and ridiculed by his old tormentors, Darkwing loses all self-confidence.
  • He's Back!: Darkwing snaps out of it when he sees that Gosalyn and Launchpad are in danger.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Megavolt was about to exact his revenge for his tormentors making him what he is, only to forgot what he is. As he tried to remember that, Launchpad and Gosalyn untied the captives. Before they all could get away, a desperate Megavolt pleaded for anyone to tell him what is he does, and Launchpad thoughtlessly told him he was a supervillain and got him back on track.
  • Origins Episode: It's this episode where Megavolt's origins are revealed. It is also established, at least for this episode, that Drake Mallard first became Darkwing Duck to save everyone at the prom when Megavolt started his rampage.
  • Pet the Dog: Megavolt just couldn't finish off the unmasked and thoroughly humiliated Darkwing, shifting his wrath on the more deserving bullies instead.
  • Photo Doodle Recognition: As Drake was flipping through his high school yearbook, Gosalyn thought the science nerd in his class looked strangely familiar and started drawing on it. Drake was initially irate, until she showed him that he'd actually gone to school with Megavolt.
  • Recognition Failure: Drake, Launchpad and Gosalyn initially fail to recognize Megavolt when he's at the refreshment table. On top of this, Megavolt fails to be concerned about Launchpad's presence, even though he thanks him by name when asking him a question. Launchpad responds by saying "No problemo, Megavolt". It's at this point that Launchpad, Drake and Gosalyn actually realize that Megavolt has been standing in front of them the whole time.
  • Reunion Revenge: Megavolt tries to use the class reunion to get revenge on the classmates that caused him to get his powers.
  • The Unmasking: The main drama is when Darkwing is unmasked in front of Megavolt and his two former tormentors. Luckily he was able to hypnotize the latter to forget, and Megavolt... Well, this is one of the three episodes where he acts his most unhinged.
  • Treadmill Trauma: Megavolt received his powers by performing a science experiment where he ran on a carpeted treadmill in an attempt to accumulate large amounts of static electricity... and the school bully tied him to it and turned up the speed, trapping him there for hours.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Megavolt shows up at the reunion in uniform, where he manages to make his way to the refreshment table and helps himself to some food without bothering anyone. This is only a small diversion, as he does go on to threaten the crowd.
