Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 8 Comic Book Capers

Go To

Darkwing convinces a comic book executive to let him have a shot at writing his own comics. However, getting it written is easier said than done as everyone from Gosalyn to Megavolt has their own ideas about how the comic should go.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Wimp: In-Universe. The original draft of the comic invoked Artistic License to humanize the Darkwing character. This is what sets off Darkwing as he flips at the idea that he'd cowardly run away, especially from someone like Megavolt.
  • Animal Superhero: Super Bunny, a rabbit with superpowers is added to the story as Darkwing's "faithful pet."
  • Artistic License – Biology: When Darkwing shoots salt at the Giant Slug Monster, it causes it to shrink. While this could be considered a variation, it's not the same effect salt has on real life slugs.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: When Megavolt adds his own touches to the story, he turns himself into a colossus as tall as a skyscraper to defeat Darkwing. Darkwing retorts that he can beat Megavolt "no matter what shoe size [he] wear[s]."
  • Breakout Character: In-Universe, the executive decides he hates Darkwing's comic, but wants to make a comic about a secondary character called Super Bunny.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The giant cup of coffee.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The executive tells Darkwing that the reason they humanized the Darkwing character was because they felt he seemed too courageous, daring, and larger than life. Darkwing retaliates that that's what a hero is supposed to be.
  • Cowardly Lion: The original draft of the comic turned Darkwing into this. This upset Darkwing, stating it would ruin his reputation.
  • David vs. Goliath: What the final act of the comic becomes, with Darkwing taking on a giant Megavolt.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: While dealing with the giant slug monster, Launchpad comments they were about to be done it by 'a plain old garden pest!'. This gives Darkwing the idea to use salt against it.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Darkwing drinks some lemonade that Gosalyn made with jalapenos, making him breathe fire.
  • Friendly Enemy: Megavolt while reading the script reduces his "villainy" to arguing about how much power he has in the comic. Although he's disappointed that he loses, Darkwing manages to walk from him before they can go into an actual fight.
  • Handy Remote Control: In the comic, Megavolt developed one to control the power company's output, enabling him to turn anything electrical into his private army with controlled power surges. When Megavolt gets his hands on the comic, he adds in that his comic book self used the remote to channel the power company's electricity into himself and become a giant.
  • Her Code Name Was "Mary Sue": Surprisingly averted. Despite D.W. being the writer of his comic, everyone tends to stay in-character. He doesn't even shy away from his comic book self experiencing some Amusing Injuries.
  • I Have to Go Iron My Dog: After Darkwing catches her messing with his comic book, Gosalyn runs off with the excuse "My bike's double-parked!".
  • Running Gag: Launchpad creates a character called Little Running Gag, who does a Pie in the Face on a regular basis. He even crosses into D.W.'s world when the latter summons him to toss a pie at the executive.
  • Salt Solution: Gosalyn tries to improve Darkwing's story by adding a Giant Slug Monster from Mars. Darkwing defeats the monster by loading his gun with salt.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: After all his effort to tell a story his way, Darkwing finds his story turned down by the executive. He sics Little Running Gag on the executive and decides to deliver his comic to Disney.
  • Take a Third Option: In the original version of the comic, upon cornering Darkwing in an alley, Megavolt asks him how he'd like to go: Regular or Extra Crispy. Darkwing nervously suggests peacefully in his sleep at an obscenely old age.
  • Take That!: The episode features a very harsh swipe to Warner Bros. in the form of a rather nasty Porky Pig ersatz who rejects Darkwing's comic in favor of one about a cartoon bunny.
  • They Called Me Mad!: After taking over in the comic book story, Megavolt rants "They called me mad! They called me insane! They were right."
  • Think of the Children!: Binkie's reason for editing the comic book; she believes the violence in it will have an adverse effect on children.
  • Too Many Cooks Spoil the Soup: The premise of the episode. Darkwing is preparing to pitch a comic book of his fabulous adventures, but he keeps getting called away from his typewriter. Other characters study his pitch while he's away and decide to "improve" it, resulting in the comic book storyline going completely Off the Rails (all Played for Laughs, of course).
