Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 25 Smarter Than A Speeding Bullet

Go To

Darkwing's attempted thwarting of Steelbeak's rubber ducky theft is interrupted by a spaceship containing a horrible, grotesque abomination (a human) named Comet Guy. He has superpowers such as freeze vision and super-strength and has come seeking a trainer in the ways of superheroism. Unfortunately, not only is Comet Guy naive and accident-prone, but he also has an easily exploitable weakness: if he hears a bell, he goes into a trance and dances until he hears a whistle, often causing plenty of collateral damage in the process.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Actually Quite Catchy: After defeating Steelbeak by following the example of a dancing-hypnotized Comet Guy, Launchpad keeps dancing and Darkwing has to tell him to stop.
  • A Truce While We Gawk: During their first encounter with Comet Guy the two fighting parties do nothing but stare at the "bizarre-looking alien monstrosity" until Steelbeak see Comet Guy's weakness.
  • Character Catchphrase: Comet Guy has two:
    • "Oopsy" whenever he messes up, which is a very often.
    • "HO-HO!" in a sing-song cry when he springs to action.
  • Destructive Saviour: Comet Guy. His first appearance has him stopping Steelbeak from robbing a warehouse... by incinerating the warehouse and everything in it.
  • Hero with an F in Good: Comet Guy again. It's so bad that his planet has sent him to train under an alien champion so he can up his grade.
  • Humans Are Cthulhu: Human-resembling Comet Guy in a world with Funny Animals.
  • Hyper-Destructive Bouncing Ball: Steelbeak steals a bunch of rubber in order to create one of these, known as the F.O.W.L ball.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Steelbeak puts a bucket over his head, dons a makeshift cape, and claims to be a superhero. Comet Guy is completely convinced, even though he's already met Steelbeak and Steelbeak's done nothing else to change his clothes or hide his highly distinctive, well, steel beak.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a reference to "Faster than a speeding bullet", a famous way to describe Superman's Super-Speed which was first used in the intro to the Superman Theatrical Cartoons.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Comet Guy starts to dance everytime he hears a bell, though it did become useful to defeat the bad guys in the end.
  • Wrong Turn at Albuquerque: It's eventually revealed that not only is Darkwing not the "champion" that Comet Guy was supposed to learn from, Comet Guy didn't even manage to go to the right planet. He should have taken that turn at Andromeda, apparently.
