Recap / Dark S3 E2 "The Survivors"

Go To

Martha travels to 1888 to warn her friends about the 2020 disaster. Winden residents past and present search for their missing loved ones.

Tropes:

  • Apocalypse How: Class 1. It's shown Winden (and most of Germany) have bore the brunt of the explosion at the Power Plant, while the rest of the world had to do with societal upheaval.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Regina in 1987 despairs over her missing mother.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Katharina finally meets Ulrich again, who has been stuck in the mental asylum for decades, and vows to free him.
  • Bleed 'Em and Weep: Tronte cries while he is killing Regina.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Martha has another nightmare and wakes up from it like this.
  • Cool Old Guy: Gustav Tannhaus in 1888.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Bartosz and Jonas have hit this due to getting stuck permanently in 1888.
  • Dies Wide Open: Regina's eyes remain open after she dies.
  • Dramatic Irony: Teenage Ulrich smirks that the old lunatic got Michael, not knowing Michael is his future son and the old lunatic is him.
    • Jana tears at Tronte for holding a memorial for Mads, hoping he's still alive. Mads indeed has died, but his body won't be discovered for another 32 years.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The family lineage in Eva's room indicates that Agnes and Noah are Bartosz's children.
  • Gone to the Future: Why Charlotte went missing in 2020, she travelled to 2053 just before the Apocalypse.
  • Internal Reveal: Martha tells Bartosz that Adam is an older Jonas.
    • Martha also tells the 1888 Travelers about the alternate universe.
    • Charlotte finds out her mother is Elisabeth.
    • Jana reveals to half of Winden that Tronte had an affair with Claudia the night of Mads's disappearance.
  • Kid from the Future: Katharina meets her mother who is working at the mental asylum.
  • Long-Lost Relative: The Nielsens are directly descended from the Tiedemanns.
  • Missing Child: 2020!Katharina has printed flyers saying that Michael has been missing for three months. (It seems both Michael and Ines were relocated by Child Protective Services to allow Michael time to recover, so the flyers are wrong).
  • My Future Self and Me: 2020!Katharina remembers her past self dismissing her as a lunatic as she and Ulrich kiss.
  • Offing the Offspring: If Regina is Tronte's daughter, it counts as this.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jana gives a scathing one to Tronte for 'giving up' on his son and pursuing Claudia's disappearance, notwithstanding that Claudia is the suspect (correctly) for Egon's murder. It seems to have worked, as Tronte abandons his search for Claudia and stays with Jana.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Stranger Jonas certainly sees Martha as this.
  • The Reveal: The Apocalypse in Eva's World is scheduled to be on November 8th.
  • Surprise Incest: Tronte and Agnes Nielsen with Claudia and Doris Tiedemann respectively, as the latter duo are the great-great-grandmothers of the former duo.
    • And as Silja is Hannah and Egon's daughter, and therefore Claudia's half-sister, it also means Bartosz married and has kids (unknowingly) with his great-aunt.
  • Time Stands Still: The global news media states that majority of the damage caused by the Apocalypse outside Germany is due to everything going to a standstill right before the Apocalypse.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Stranger Jonas is shown to be more angry and vicious than in 2020.
  • Trapped in the Past: Jonas, Bartosz, Magnus and Franziska get stuck in 1888 due to the absence of nuclear technology in pre-war Germany. It's implied the stress of this is how Jonas eventually becomes Adam.
  • The Unreveal: It's not revealed how old Tronte survived the Apocalypse.
  • Vorpal Pillow: Tronte kills Regina by smothering her with a pillow.
