Recap / Dark S1 E5 "Truths"

Go To

A third boy goes missing. Hannah takes a step too far with Ulrich. The stranger asks Regina to deliver a package to Jonas. Meanwhile, Martha has a difficult time to decide between Jonas and Bartosz.

Tropes:

  • Affably Evil: Noah genuinely behaves well when he interacts with Mikkel in 1986 and Bartosz in 2019.
  • Blatant Lies: Ulrich assures Katharina he isn't (or wasn't) cheating on her.
  • Dramatic Irony: Before Katharina has sex with Ulrich, she says she doesn't want to have kids ever. He promises that won't happen. Of course they'll have 3 kids in the future.
  • False Rape Accusation: Hannah tells the police that she saw Ulrich raping Katharina out of jealousy.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Hannah in 1986 as well as 2019.
  • Here We Go Again!: Ulrich laments he's no different than Egon, who he believes botched up Mads's case while drunk, but he himself is nowhere close to solving his own son's missing case as well. Charlotte also thinks the same, but for different reasons, mentioned by her grandfather.
  • Missing Child: Yasin has now gone missing, too.
  • Red Herring: When Noah meets Bartosz, we are led to assume Bartosz is going to be the next missing kid, but then he comes back safe.
  • The Reveal: Mikkel never made it back to 2019 and was adopted by Ines Kahnwald. He is actually Jonas's father Michael.
  • Split Screen: Again, several times throughout the episode, there is a split screen showing the characters from 1986 and 2019.
  • Surprise Incest
  • Their First Time: Ulrich and Katharina have their first time in the storeroom of the school gym.
  • Trapped in the Past: Mikkel never made it back to his own time.
  • Voiceover Letter: Mikkel's letter to his son Jonas is read as a voiceover.
  • Wham Episode: The episode reveals that Mikkel, who couldn't get back to 2019, was adopted by Ines in 1986, and grew up to be Jonas's father Michael. As a result, this makes Magnus Jonas's uncle and Martha (his love interest) his aunt.
  • Wham Line: The priest that talks to Mikkel at the hospital tells him that his name is Noah, like the man who gave Elisabeth the watch when she was missing.
    • Michael's suicide note, which reveals he is Mikkel, the boy who has recently vanished from Winden.
  • When the Planets Align: Charlotte tells Ulrich about the Lunar-Solar-Cycle, where every 33 years, the universe is the exact same.
