Recap / Daria S 5 E 02

Go To

As their six-month dating anniversary approaches, Daria feels that Tom is taking her for granted. Jake gets a job at an Internet company.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: After improvising a hopeless, rambling presentation for buzzdome.com, Jake pathetically asks his bemused audience if it was "edgy".
  • Continuity Nod: Quinn minces no words recalling the circumstances surrounding Daria and Tom's first kiss. She also mentions the Fashion Club's "blush-a-thon" from the same episode.
  • Food End: Daria and Tom belatedly celebrate their anniversary by helping themselves to Quinn's boxes of candy.
  • Forgotten Anniversary: The whole plot is kicked off by Quinn informing Daria the six-month anniversary of when she started dating Tom is approaching. The thing is, Daria and Tom didn't know and likely wouldn't have cared. Tom points out Daria only started caring when Quinn pointed it out.
  • Hypocrite: Daria is mad at Tom for not acknowledging a milestone that she herself didn't know about until Quinn told her. Tom spells this out to her at the end.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Noah says Jake's presentation was just a string of buzzwords...and that Jake didn't paradigm-shift at all.
  • Imagine Spot: After grumbling to Jane that she thinks Tom treats her like a piece of furniture, Daria imagines Tom advertising her as a comfy recliner.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Jane says Tom never took her anywhere romantic either. Except for that horse-drawn carriage ride, and the fancy restaurant where he had the band play her favourite song.
  • Insistent Terminology: Quinn doesn't ask guys to get her gifts. She merely "suggests".
  • Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation: Nobody at buzzdome.com can articulate exactly what their organisation actually does.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Brittany gives Kevin this excuse for flirting with another guy. Kevvy asks how he could be jealous if he wasn't supposed to know about it.
  • Shout-Out:
  • What, Exactly, Is His Job?: Even by buzzdome.com's standards, Samir's role ("one-man pinch-hitting brains trust") is pretty nebulous. At one point he confesses to Jake that he is paid "to sit around and daydream."
  • You Know What You Did: Instead of telling Tom what's bothering her, Daria starts acting cold towards him until he loses patience and stops calling her. She comes to her senses after she overhears Mr O'Neill playing the same game with Ms. Barch.
  • You Never Did That for Me: Daria calls Tom out for not treating her to the kind of Grand Romantic Gesture he used to do for Jane. Tom tells her that those were just his vain attempts to re-kindle his and Jane's dying sparks.
