Recap / Daria S 4 E 11

Go To

Quinn develops an interest in guardian angels and starts to believe she has one of her own when she has a near death experience. Soon Quinn starts to think every good thing that happens to her is because of her so-called angel, annoying Daria more than usual.

Meanwhile, Brittany's dad is throwing her a party to celebrate her straight "C" average and hires Mystik Spiral for the occasion.

Tropes:

  • Department of Redundancy Department: Trent points out that Max's lyrics, "The windchill drops below subzero," make no sense because "Subzero" means it's already below zero and couldn't drop any further.
  • Easy Evangelism: Quinn's entire arc is centered around her believing there's a guardian angel looking out for her after she narrowly avoids a falling lighting fixture. She soon attributes every positive thing, no matter how minute or skewed, to this "angel's" presence. Her faith's then shaken after she humiliates herself at Brittany's party and accidentally destroys her crystal bullhorn. Daria has a talk with Quinn and convinces her that, maybe, her angel wasn't present because he had more important things to worry about then salvaging a chunk of expensive glass that Brittany didn't really deserve. Quinn goes back to believing in her angel, but figures he'll be looking out for her regarding more important stuff.
  • Everyone Has Standards: You can tell that, for all of the ways Quinn annoys and antagonizes Daria, Daria is still horrified when Quinn almost gets killed by a falling chandelier.
  • Guardian Angel: Quinn gets interested in them after watching a TV special, and believes she has one of her own when she gets up from the kitchen table right before a light fixture falls and almost cracks her head open.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Sandi shamelessly tries to horn in on Quinn's angel thing by claiming she has a guardian angel too, and it told her to have vinaigrette dressing on her salad at lunch to make her hair more luminous. Moments later Sandi's running to the bathroom thanks to food poisoning from said dressing.
  • Hollywood Atheist: Averted in Daria's case, whose own lack of belief is mainly because she hasn't seen any evidence to convince her there's an afterlife, angels, etc. But she's also willing to admit (at least for Quinn's sake) that she hasn't any evidence to prove those things don't exist, and that ultimately Quinn should just follow her beliefs if they feel right to her.
  • Karmic Protection: Discussed via Jane, who hypothesizes that Daria may be afraid there really is something looking after Quinn which would mean someone or something is keeping track and decided in advance people like Quinn deserve protection while people like Daria and Jane are left to rot no matter what they do.
    Jane: God I'm depressed.
  • Logic Bomb: Parodied between Stacy and Tiffany, when Stacy asks if people in poor countries can't eat than they can't get diet soda. Tiffany asks if they can't drink diet soda, how do they stay thin?
  • Noodle Incident: One of the Three Js implies they've had past experiences with a parole officer.
  • Older Than They Look: Upchuck mistakes Brittany's stepmom for a Lawndale High student, and is both shocked and aroused when he finds out she's older. Thankfully nothing comes out of this.
  • Pet the Dog: Daria imparts her agnostic worldview to Quinn in a way that respects rather than derides her little sister's shaken belief in the supernatural. Helen observes the exchange from afar and is moved by its tenderness.
