Recap / Daria S 3 E 10

Go To

Daria gets her driver's license (after months of trying) and must drive to the next county to bail her friend Jane out of jail.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: When Quinn calls Daria timid, she runs over Travis's suitcase.
  • Blatant Lies: The guy Mystik Spiral shares their cell with is a complete moron who spins a lot of bullshit that makes it sound like he's the father of rock music. It's telling Trent is the only one who doesn't believe him at all, and is amazed the rest of the guys do.
  • Noodle Implements: Jane has a discussion with her cellmate on whether or not an eggbeater would be considered art to Martians, and if so could it be considered art to Earthlings as well? The woman reasons if an eggbeater can be used as evidence it can be considered art too.
  • Noodle Incident: The reason Jane's cellmate was arrested, because her husband was "being stupid." Said husband also happens to be a judge.
  • Not So Stoic: When Daria is taking her driver’s test for the umpteenth time, she asks her instructor to at least let her know how she’s doing. He says he can’t say anything until the test is over, only for him to rejoice when she successfully parallel parks.
  • Only Sane Man: Trent proves he's the only member of Mystik Spiral with a functioning brain, appalled that his bandmates actually believed all the bullshit their cellmate spouted about knowing famous musicians.
  • Shout-Out: Part of Quinn and Daria's plot with Travis and the money is one to Thelma & Louise.
    • Quinn mentions that if things go great, they'll be back in time for Buffy.
  • Street Smart: Quinn proves she has this over Daria, when she charms a bar full of cowboys into giving her enough money to bail Jane and Mystik Spiral out of jail.
  • Tattooed Crook: Jane's cellmate demands that Jane give her one, and is pissed when she finds that Jane only has the tools to give her a temporary one.
  • Unflattering ID Photo: Jane note's that Daria's grotesque photo makes her driver's license "official".
  • Waxing Lyrical:
    • Doubles as a Chekhov's Gun. When a cowboy gets (rightly) suspicious of Quinn's tale of Travis stealing her and Daria's money, Daria wins his trust by paraphrasing from "Don't Call Him a Cowboy", which Travis sang to the girls earlier ("I don't call 'em cowboys till I see 'em ride...'Cause a Stetson hat and them fancy boots don't tell me what's inside").
    • On hearing that Mystik Spiral's "world tour" amounts to a gig in Fremont a hundred miles away, Daria quips "It's a small world after all".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Daria's pretty pissed off when she learns Quinn and Travis took, and wasted, the bail money she needed for Jane and the band.
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: The state where Lawndale is located is not listed anywhere on Daria's driver's license.
