Recap / Dan Vs S 3 E 12 Dan Vs The Family Cruise

Go To

Dan accidentally becomes a stowaway on Chris and Elise's family cruise.

This episode contains examples of the following Tropes:

  • Accidental Kidnapping: The premise of the episode has Dan being accidentally packed in some luggage and brought on the cruise.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Parodied. Both Elises reveal their secret lives, while Chris confesses a minor secret about eating a gingerbread house and blaming it on the mailman. Don claims to be a half-alien hybrid sent to enslave mankind. He admits that's not true, but he was feeling left out of all the revealing.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: "Dan, you may not care much about my family, but you have a family of your own to look out for. If you vanish into the Parallelogram, who's gonna feed Mr. Mumbles?"
  • The Bermuda Triangle: In all but name.
  • Big Eater: Chris as usual, but this time means inadvertently winning an eating competition.
    "In your face, Don!"
  • Call-Back: Elise Sr. is finally shown to be working for The Mafia again.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Chris mentioning how Mr. Mumbles needs him motivates Dan to help the others escape the brig.
  • Meaningful Background Event: As the guide asks which of the group are parents, Elise looks downward sadly. It has been implied a few times she wants children.
  • Never My Fault: Elise Sr. tries to claim that Dan was the reason the crisis happened in the first place, but this is one of the few times Dan isn't primarily the problem. While it's true that he did destroy the manual steering wheel, that wouldn't have mattered had both Elises not destroyed the automatic steering system in their fight (as well as causing Dan to win the badminton game). Additionally, all five members played a role in driving the captain crazy.
  • New Parent Nomenclature Problem: Chris once again tries to call Don "Dad" only to get coolly rebuffed.
  • Only Sane Man: It's Don who points out they need to work together to get out of this mess.
  • Reset Button Ending: Ends with a vortex sending the cast to an alternate timeline where Dan didn't go on the cruise.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Dan seems to remember the events of the Family Cruise... but thinks that they're just psychic powers.
  • Shout-Out: "Make it so, Number Two."
  • The Unmasking: Elise Jr. and Sr. reveal their secret lives.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite being a family cruise, Elise's teenage brother Ben is neither seen nor mentioned.
