Recap / DC Super Hero Girls (2019) S1 E1 to 4 "#SweetJustice"

Go To

After moving to Metropolis, Barbara Gorgon a.k.a. Batgirl discovers that there is more than meets the eye to students in her school.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion:
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Wonder Woman identifies this as Batgirl's main weakness.
    Wonder Woman: You lack focus.
  • Beta Outfit: The suit Bumblebee wears trough the whole story is poorly made, bulky and literally held together with duct tape. She wears a much sleeker version in later episodes, officially introduced in "#SheMightBeGiant".
  • Blowing a Raspberry: To show their disapproval of each other, Lex and Lena (the former being a teenager with the latter being a child) blow strawberries at each other.
  • Cool, but Inefficient: Zatanna's magic might look impressive, but when it's used to throw a switch, it ends up being way slower than doing it manually. Wonder Woman lampshades this, initially stating that her magic is impressive, but needs to channel it and use it more practically.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Kara Danvers is demonstrated to easily forget about her Kryptonian Super-Strength when upset, hitting Diana with great force even before knowing she's an Amazon (and thus is durable enough to tank it).
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Main protagonists, side heroes, most of the villains... On her first day, Babs runs into Karen, Kara and Zee before she even actually enters inside the building and she meets Jessica and Hal soon after.
  • Fan Disservice: When the girls take Wonder Woman for her first spa day, we see a close-up of her hairy leg with craggy toenails and bulging calluses.
  • Food Fight: Babs intentionally starts one to end up alone in detention with Kara, Karen, Zee and Jessica.
  • Forgot About Her Powers: As the Amazons pull the girls by their ears, Kara suddenly remembers her Super-Strength and punches one of them out into the horizon.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Although she's usually referred to by just Lena, her mother refers to her daughter by her full name, with it being all but stated that she's in big trouble.
    Mrs. Luthor: Lena Lutessa Luthor!
  • Impractically Fancy Outfit: Zee originally plans to use her stage magician outfit as her superhero costume, but Wonder Woman tells her to make a new one.
  • In the Hood: Diana initially wears it when she's not fighting. The girls help her get regular teen clothes in Part 2.
  • Meaningful Background Event: Trough the whole episode, teens wearing Luthor's virtual reality goggles appear, appearing to be increasingly stumbling blindly disconnected from reality.
  • No, You: Exchange after Lena reveals her plan:
Supergirl: ...That's the dumbest plan I've ever heard.
Lena: You're the dumbest plan I've ever heard!
  • Overly Long Name: The superhero name that Karen planned to originally use for herself starts with "The Indestructible, Gamma Phase, 1000 K-" and who knows for how much longer it goes. Diana interrupts her and decides to just call her "Bumblebee".
  • Photo-Booth Montage: The sequence of the girls having fun at an amusement park naturally end up with a montage of them laughing in a photo booth.
  • The Power of Rock: Lena is defeating by hooking her robot to guitar amp and having Supergirl shortcut the system with a rock solo.
  • Punched Across the Room: As a result of Kara's superpowered punch, Diana is flown across the classroom and crashes through a wall.
  • Red Herring: Barbara at first suspects Lex Luthor to be behind the robots tearing down Sweet Justice, noting his logo on the robots. Turns out it was his little sister Lena stealing his technology and using it in a plan to get rid of teenagers.
  • Refusal of the Call: Initially none of the girls besides Babs and Diana is really interested in becoming superheroes and they get easily discouraged after their first failure.
  • Repeat Cut: Diana crashing through the wall of the classroom is shown three times, each with a different angle (from the side, downward, and front).
  • Speak in Unison:
    • In the movie theater, after Diana wonders "Teenage males are very confusing...", Jessica, Barbara, Karen and Zee say in perfect unison, "Tell me about it."
    • When Batgirl calls Kara, Jessica, Zee and Karen on their phones at the same time, they respond simultaneously, "I'm not talking to you, Barb!"
  • Split-Screen Reaction: When Kara's punch sends Wonder Woman crashing through a wall, the screen gets split in five to show the horrified reaction of all the others — including Kara, who's immediately panicking at the thought of having hurt Diana badly.
  • Sweet Tooth: Diana, never tasting sweets before, goes absolutely crazy over desserts from "Sweet Justice".
  • Takes Ten to Hold: Amazons are very strong, but it takes no less than dozen of them in a Dog Pile of Doom to pin down Kara Danvers, a.k.a. Supergirl.
  • Teenage Wasteland: Or rather, tweenage wasteland. Lena's plan is to distract teenagers with virtual reality goggles, then tearing down their hangouts so that children will rise up and take over (although she seems to have forgotten about the adults).
  • Throw the Book at Them: At one point during their brawl, Diana attacks Kara by throwing school books at her, with enough force for them to embed into a table used as shield.
  • Un Evil Laugh: After revealing her Evil Plan, Lena's attempt at Evil Laugh... doesn't sound evil.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Supergirl compared to Wonder Woman. Best exemplified during their fight when Diana easily bests Kara by avoiding her blows until she actually tries to punch her. This causes Kara to slightly slide backward.
  • Wasn't That Fun?: Batgirl's reaction after being thrown off a building to force Supergirl to reveal her powers and save her? "Again! Again, again, again!"
  • We Care: A LexCorp ad features Lex Luthor mentioning things his company does because they care.
  • Wimp Fight: The battle on the Amazon ship starts out properly superheroic, but it quickly devolves into slapstick, with Zatanna in the typical blind-slaps duel, Green Lantern and an Amazon pushing each other's faces, and the minute Bumblebee receiving a noogie. Supergirl, meanwhile, is too busy arm-wrestling to help them.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: After hearing Lena Luthor's Evil Plan to ruin everything teenagers hold dear so children take over Metropolis, Supergirl dryly comments, "That's the dumbest plan I've ever heard." The response is a lame No, You!
Lena: YOU'RE the dumbest plan I've ever heard!
