Recap / DC Super Hero Girls (2019) S1 E10 "#SuperWho?"

Go To

Kara gets fed up that all the attention from the public and newspapers is constantly centered on Superman's heroic actions and not on Supergirl's. She ends up confronting her cousin over it, to disastrous results.

Tropes:

  • Ash Face: Kara gets her face and labcoat covered in soot after her chemistry experiment explodes. Of course she's otherwise unharmed, 'cause Kryptonian.
  • Blob Monster: The two Kryptonians fighting accidentally cause some toxic waste to take life under the shape of a green, glowing sludge monster they have to fight to save the city.
  • Book Dumb: Kara doesn't understand any of Karen's scientific speak, even though it is literally what they learned in chemistry class in high school that day.
Karen: Remember chemistry class? High temperatures can break chemicals down to their base elements!
[Kara stares at her and lifts her shoulders and hands up in an "I don't know" shrug]
  • Cat Up a Tree: Superman rescuing an old lady's cat up a tree getting more attention from the public than Supergirl jumping on a bomb just earlier proves the last straw for her.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Kara accidentally creates the final threat and is then dejected over not getting credit for stopping it, even though she wouldn't have been able to do that much without Karen Beecher.
  • Crush Blush: Lois is shown blushing quite a bit when Superman notices her.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Supergirl lampshades all the similarities between herself and Superman.
Kara: I mean, I've the exact same powers as him! I come from the exact same planet! I practically have the exact same backstory!
  • Fireball Eyeballs: Supergirl gets flames in her eyes a couple times from her cousin infuriating her. (The first time, it segues to an actual burning building.)
  • Hollywood Acid: Everything the Blob Monster touches or get splashed by its sludge dissolves, including metal and concrete. Bumblebee realises it would be extremely dangerous if Superman were to hit it and splash the stuff everywhere, especially since there's a crowd.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Kara finally snaps and demands Clark stop hogging the limelight, complaining that she's been busting her ass to prove that she's as good a hero or better, while he's just been... well, as he points out, he's been being a hero.
  • Jumping on a Grenade: Among the many exploits performed by Supergirl to upstage Superman, she covers a dynamite bomb with her body right before it explodes.
  • Mythology Gag: The episode includes spoofs of Superman: The Movie's wrecked-train-tracks and cat-in-tree rescues.
  • Record Needle Scratch: Superman's triumphant leitmotif stops with a scratching sound when Supergirl calls him out.
  • Ring-Ring-CRUNCH!: The episode opens on Kara pulverizing her alarm clock — again. Although here it isn't because it's ringing her awake, but because the radio is speaking of Superman.
  • Roadside Wave: At the beginning, adding to her already fool mood toward her cousin, Kara gets splashed by a bus tour full of Superman fans.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: In chemistry class, Kara gets all worked up against Superman while carelessly mixing up chemicals, despite Karen's warnings, naturally results in the stuff exploding in her face.
  • Use Your Head: Supergirl and Superman tries to headbutt each other. That actually hurts Kara's forehead. (Clark seems more worried about his hairdo.)
  • Wimp Fight: After a few minutes of punching each other through buildings, Superman and Supergirl's fight degenerates into this.
