Recap / Cyborg 009 (1968) E1 "The Terror of Monster Island"

Go To

Aired April 5th, 1968

The Episode starts out at "Kageyama Prison" with a security guard walking past a cell. Thirty seconds later, a giant monster rat breaks a hole in a solid concrete wall, understandably terrifying a security guard. Guards are unable to bring the rat down with their guns and it chews through the concrete structure of a prison tower, tumbling it over. The rat destroys another wall, and all of the inmates (at least two of which are convicted murderers) rush out and scatter. A group of three inmates comes across a mansion in the middle of the woods. Though one expresses some doubts, the other two eventually convince him to join them and break in.

A robotic squirrel spies on the two that go in, and the episode cuts to a pair of Doctor Frankensteins. At this point, it's revealed that the giant rat caused the prison breakout so that the two doctors could get some human specimens for their experiments. The lookout guy escapes, and we cut to 009 & 003 in 009's convertible, hearing about the breakout, and the missing three prisoners. The prisoner who escaped from the monsters immediately runs into the convertible.

Joe immediately shoots all of the bugs save for one, which stings the prisoner before he can reveal any information. 009 and 003 decide to take the prisoner to Dr. Gilmore before turning him over. Dr. Gilmore takes a look at him. At this point, 006 and 007 come in with a meal for the prisoner to eat. He instead dumps it on his head. The two trapped prisoners get enlarged by a giant ray.

After analyzing the dirt on his shoe, 006 and 007 join 009 to investigate. 007 disguises him, but the villains decide to send out spy robots. After 009 and 006 save 007 from the same vines that caught the other two earlier, the three fight maneuver through multiple traps and ridiculous amounts of weapons including missiles. The villains chase the cyborgs, and upon here their numbered codenames, figure out that there are more of them, and promptly captures the prisoner and 003, telling the others to meet them at "Monster Island".

Tropes:

  • Acrofatic: The fat guy who, minutes earlier, claimed to be out of breathe is now able to outrun a swarm of bugs.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The third prisoner loses a shoe just outside the mansion.
  • Collapsing Lair: 009 turns Monster Island into this. In a subversion, everyone is already on a motorboat a safe distance away.
  • Damsel in Distress: What should have been an early Awesome Moment for 003 in retrieving the prisoner turns into this when the flying saucer captures both of them.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Subversion, one of the prisoners has an eyepatch, but he's not powerful.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: 009 has himself, 007 and 006 all drop their weapons to avoid 003 getting hurt. 007 promptly decides turn it around into this.
  • Hammerspace: Kegani produces a grappling hook out of nowhere.
  • Henshin Hero: 007
  • Meaningful Name: Considering "Semushi" is the name of a mutation that creates hunchback fruit flies...
  • Mr. Exposition: 006 is one, even combining with As You Know.
  • Obvious Trap: Monster Island is one. The Heroes Go Anyway.
  • More Dakka: The Villains love doing this in defended the mansion.
  • Rump Roast: 007 experiences this. Unusually, the first time, he's able to put it out himself.
  • Seen It All: By the time the giant seagulls attack, 009's developed this attitude towards the monsters — at least until the giant crabs attack.
  • Shout-Out: Dr. Dracula wants humans.
  • Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Trailer: 002, 004, 005, and 008. By virtual of a single mention, 001 is in the episode... but off-screen.
  • Tagalong Kid: 007
  • Tempting Fate: 003 comments to 009 that the three prisoners might be in the area. 009 comments that it won't happen. The prisoner is seen by the two running down the highway.
