Chapter 16 — Sinister Date

Much to Nezu's chagrin, his prediction was true, and the journalists at the press conference are asking loaded questions in an obvious attempt to make the students look bad. However, between him, Aizawa and Beru, they manage to push for an unbiased narrative of the events, although it is obvious the journalist wanted something more shocking.

Meanwhile, the students have their individual meetings with the psychologists. Izuku is confronted with the fact that his self-deprecation is unwarranted. Tsuyu shows deep admiration of Izuku and his abilities. Ojiro confesses the reasons for his hatred of Izuku - or rather, his Quirk. Mineta attempts to cover up for his mistake. Yaoyorozu is recovering, but appears to be somewhat obsessed with Lily.

After his own session, Iida is forced to admit the fact that he didn't fully trust Izuku due to his Quirk, and lambasts himself for his errors. Finding a clearly depressed Uraraka, Iida asks her what is wrong with her, and after struggling with what to do she reveals what happened earlier with Izuku.

Done with the day, Izuku uses the passes All Might gifted him to the local All Might-theme park for a date with Tsuyu, with Tae acting as their chaperone. Unknown to them, they are being followed by Kyoka and Fumikage, who want to make sure their friends' date goes unmolested. Kyoka manages to get a hold of Kirishima so he can distract Ashido, and the two follow Izuku and Tsuyu while Kirishima decides to take Ashido to watch a film marathon at a nearby cinema.

The date doesn't have a good start, as Tsuyu's proposal of going to the House of Terror backfires when it turns out it is zombie-themed, so Tsuyu suggests the shooting range booth. Quickly, Izuku proves his marksman skills by easily correcting the rigged gun's deviation to win three plushies for Tsuyu and her siblings, and Tae wins two for herself, much to the attendant's shock. All the while, Kyoka and Fumikage speak with each other, and the latter asks the former why she's so interested in ensuring Izuku has fun with Tsuyu: Kyoka reveals that Izuku saved her from a man that nearly killed her a few years before, and one of the reasons she joined U.A. was because she found out Izuku intended to go to the hero school and she wanted to pay him back.

Ignorant of the drama behind them, Izuku and Tsuyu go into the Tunnel of Love, where they take advantage of the darkness to kiss, while behind them Fumikage and Kyoka keep bickering, until Fumikage mentions he finds her cute, embarrassing both of them into silence.

Back at U.A., Nezu curses himself for telling his friend Takeo about Lily's current place, and arrives too late to prevent Takeo from stampeding towards his son.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: "Midoriya-san... surely you know of someone who sees you as a good person?" is one for Izuku, as he begins to stop seeing himself in such a negative light in spite of all the good he has already done.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: While at the Tunnel of Love, Kyoka begs for something to distract her from the horrible background music, so Fumikage asks her about her feelings for Izuku. When Kyoka proves reluctant to speak of them, Fumikage replies he can remain silent.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The girl Izuku saved from a knife-wielding killer, back in Chapter 1? Kyoka was that girl.
  • Crime of Self-Defense: Most of the journalists at the press conference are keen on painting the students as being in the wrong, even though they were obviously defending themselves.
  • Date Peepers: Kyoka and Fumikage are following Izuku and Tsuyu (and Tae) during their date so no one can spoil it.
  • First-Name Basis: As shown in the previous episode, Izuku is now like this with Fumikage and Kyoka. Fumikage using Kyoka's name shocks her (or more like she's trying to hide her embarrassment at Fumikage guessing she has a crush on Izuku).
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Izuku only needs one shot to learn how the rigged BB gun are tricked out and quickly hits three targets with pinpoint accuracy. Then Tae repeats the same feat.
  • Loophole Abuse: Per All Might's explicit instructions, the games at the park cannot be deliberately rigged in any way - so the managers just use shoddy materials so the guns aren't as precise as they ought to be.
  • Oh, Crap!: Nezu thinks this when he's too late to warn Yaoyorozu and Lily about the incoming stampede known as Takeo Go.
  • Shout-Out: While not named, it is obvious that Kirishima and Ashido are watching Terminator.
  • Stalker with a Crush: After Izuku saved her, Kyoka developed a crush on him and started to stalk him so she could learn about him and try to find a way to thank him.
