Go To

The events of this episode begin on July 15th, 1993, 1994, and 1995.

The Wallises organize their yearly hunting trip (except in 1994).

In 1993, the Wallises prepare for their hunting trip. Her stepsister Ash, who is back from her mother's, makes her dislike of Joy and disregard of Kate well-known. Jaime, Derek, and their friends come along too, and so does Martin. Kate eases Martin into handling a gun, while he compliments her shooting ability.

During the night, Kate sneaks out of her cabin and spends the night stargazing and bonding with Martin. The next morning she lies to Jamie about why she snuck out.

In 1994, Kate starts therapy. On one of her visists, she bumps into Mallory and they strike up a friendly conversation. Joy and Kate come to the police station where they're told the fingerprint analysis on the necklace is inconclusive and Jeanette won't be charged. After unsuccessfully trying to talk with Kate, who is now holding her at arm's length, Ash confides in Derek, who tells her how he once used a puppet to talk to Jeanette when she was little and scared of him. She decides to create a "puppet" of her own for Kate, the chatroom user "Berenice4".

In 1995, Nick Marshall, the Wallises' lawyer, advises Kate to get her story straight and consistent in the smallest details, which Kate struggles to do. After she gets high with Mallory, Joy brings her a letter someone left at their door, a one-word letter: "Liar". She explains that according to the lawyers, if they lose the case, they'll lose the house and Kate's college fund, and insists on organizing the hunting trip to keep their guests on their side.

At the hunting trip, under Mallory's influence, Kate refuses to eat meat or handle a gun. Joy angrily asks Mallory if she sent the letter. When Kate learns about the accusation, she makes her way to the campfire and, under the pretense of a scary story about a girl named Annabelle, blames everyone present for letting Martin get close to her two years prior. On returning home, Kate listens to tapes of her therapy sessions where she hears herself mention meeting someone named Annabelle the day she was rescued.

Tropes Used:

  • Hourglass Plot: In 1993, Kate keeps trying to establish a sisterly bond with Ash, who keeps pushing her away. In 1994, it's the other way around.
