Recap / Cross Ange Ep 25 Beyond Time

Go To

The story reaches its conclusion as Tusk, Hilda and Salia team up to rescue Ange and make one last stand against Embryo in his dimension.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • And This Is for...: Tusk kills Embryo to avenge his parents and the Ancient Humans, all while channeling his inner Domon Kasshu.
  • Attempted Rape: Embryo does one last attempt to violate Ange before she starts singing the "Endless Song".
  • Badass in Distress: Yet again, Ange is captured by Embryo and is stuck in his dimension.
  • Be Yourself:
    • Salia has to key into her emotions to activate her Ragna-mail with Salia gaining Villkiss's Ariel teleportation mode.
    • Hilda, also keying into her emotions, unlocks hers, gaining Villkiss' Michael BFS wielding mode.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis:
    • Ange began the series as a naïve princess promising herself she would wipe out all Norma and uphold the peace and prosperity of the decadent Mana society. By the end, she's a hardened Norma soldier who scornfully disregards that her former homeworld (and everything it previously stood for) is in ruins and anarchy. She's also sided with nearly everyone she was previously against (the Normas, the DRAGONs and the Ancient Humans) and is set on creating a peaceful co-existence with all three parties.
    • The same could be said for the Mana society as a whole. It was previously a utopic world of peace and harmony, a world that callously looked down on normas for being allegedly violent and anti-social. The last we see the Mana society, they've become everything they accused normas and pre-mana humans of being: a broken society of violent and anti-social anarchists without mana.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Tusk, the Norma on the Aurora and the DRAGONs come to Ange's aid in the nick of time.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Norma and the DRAGONs return to the true Earth to help Ange finally kill Embryo, stopping the dimensional merge and undoing his reign of terror, and Libertas is a success. However, Ange and Sylvia are estranged, Jill is dead, and the humans in the false Earth have to live without their powers. With that said, the Norma and the DRAGONs look forward to a new future of peace and harmony.
  • Book Ends:
    • Ange sings the "Endless Song" one last time when Embryo tries forcing himself on her.
    • By the episode's end, the first opening theme is heard.
  • Call-Back:
    • When Tusk and Ange get stuck in the world where World War VII occurred, Tusk wants to build "Cafe Ange" with her after killing Embryo together. Sure enough, they build it after Embryo's demise.
    • Yet again, Ange experiences an Attempted Rape from Embryo and her crotch gets in Tusk's face.
    • In "Goodbye From the Gallows", Ange sings the "Endless Song" during her execution at the hands of the Misurugi citizens. This time around, she does the same thing when Embryo pushes himself on her.
    • Sylvia's takes Ange's advice to fight in "Distorted World" as a Meaningful Echo towards a girl who wants to fight. She also wears Ange's uniform during the latter's attempted rescue mission.
  • The Cavalry: Ange gets help from Tusk and his friends, who end up fighting Embryo.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Tusk slices Embryo in half and it isn't a nice way to go.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Salia, Hilda and Sala help Ange fight Hysterica while Tusk confronts his old nemesis. Embryo and Hysterica didn't stand a chance against them.
  • Death by Irony: Embryo is eventually killed trying to exploit the Norma for his own evil deeds.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: When Ange, Salia, Hilda and Sala destroy Hysterica and its copies, they violently explode.
  • Defiant Captive: Ange sings the "Endless Song" when Embryo tries raping her.
  • Defiant to the End: Ange to Embryo, refusing to submit to him despite his persistent efforts.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Embryo clearly didn't calculate that Ange would sing the "Endless Song" when he was trying to make her submit by force and when Tusk, the Aurora and the DRAGONs would show up.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Ange, Hilda, Salia, Tusk, and Sala's last act of destroying Embryo and Hysterica is to give him everything short of a "screw you".
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Tusk and Ange respectively finish off Embryo and Hysterica for good.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Jill perishes while Salia holds on to her.
  • Doomed Hometown: At the end of the episode, the Misurugi Empire is nothing more than a desolate wasteland. Even Ange knows she can no longer return home.
  • Due to the Dead: The tombstones of those who perished at Arzenal are placed in their honor.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The norma and the DRAGONs live in harmony following Embryo's demise.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When Jill is asked for a stretcher, she refuses and asks for a cigarette so she can die peacefully.
  • Final Battle: The final battle between Ange and Embryo and their allies.
  • The Final Temptation: Embryo gives Ange one last chance at happiness and to join him in creating a new millennium for humankind when the space-time convergence completes. Unsurprisingly, Ange spits on that offer.
  • Grand Finale: Part 4 of 4, Tusk, Salia and Hilda have to rescue Ange using the Villkiss and put a stop to Embryo's plans once and for all.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Tusk bisects Embryo's real body in half, while Ange and her allies cut Hysterica and its copies in half.
  • Heroic BSoD: Salia briefly goes through one after Jill dies in her arms.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: It would seem the one most responsible for Embryo's ultimate undoing was Embryo himself:
    • By trying to rape Ange against her will yet again, Embryo instead causes her to sing the "Endless Song", ultimately spelling his demise.
    • Tusk and Villkiss had a hand in Embryo's final death, providing the dimensional warp needed to finally confront him.
  • Hourglass Plot: At the beginning of the series, the Misurugi Empire was a prosperous utopia of peaceful mana users, while the normas are exiled to live in the "hell" that's Arzenal. In this episode, the roles have been switched: the former mana-users are condemned to the lawless, post-apocalypse nightmare that was once Misurugi, whilst the normas (along with their allies) create a true paradise on the original Earth.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: By the end of the series, the Misurugi Empire's a shell of its former self. With the mana network severed, humans are no longer able to access their magic. As for Sylvia, she leads a contingent of fellow Misurugi citizens in their fight for survival.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Eventually, once Embryo has enough of Ange getting in his way, he plans to kill her in cold blood and start all over from square one, but he doesn't get to make good on it thanks to Ange's Shut Up, Hannibal! moment.
  • Immortals Fear Death: Embryo responds to the realization that he's doomed with horror.
  • In-Universe Catharsis: Ange and the Norma finally exact revenge on Embryo by destroying Hysterica and its copies, with Tusk bisecting his real body to avenge the former's parents as well as the Ancient Humans.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Embryo practically begs for it after he fails to assault Ange, but he tries to kill her again and start over from the beginning. This gives Ange, Tusk and the Norma enough time to bisect Embryo and destroy Hysterica, bringing the villain's ambitions down in a literal fiery crash.
  • Killed Off for Real: Tusk, Ange, Salia, Hilda and Sala team up to finally kill Embryo and destroy Hysterica.
  • Machiavelli Was Wrong: Embryo's attempt to rape Ange into submission fails big time and brings an army of Ange's allies down upon him.
  • Meaningful Echo: Sylvia gives Ange's advice to a girl in the other Earth:
Sylvia: If you want to live, fight for it.

  • Named After Somebody Famous: One of the tombstones shown during the end credits is labeled “Marika Bellucci”, a nod to Italian actress Monica Bellucci.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Embryo has captured Ange and is merging the two Earths. Then Hilda, Salia, Tusk, the Aurora crew and the DRAGONs arrive. Even with the odds against him, he still manages to depower the Mana users and have their world turned into a bigger craphole by the end and has killed billions along the way.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • Embryo trapping Ange in his dimension means that she can sing the "Endless Song" to summon the Villkiss.
    • Embryo providing a way for Ange's Villkiss to be out of reach allows Tusk to activate it and send the Aurora to Embryo's dimension to finish him there.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis:
    • Ange doesn't waste anytime finishing off Embryo when her allies enter his dimension to rescue her.
    • Once Embryo is spurned by Ange enough times, he throws his theatrics out the window and tries killing her, but Ange destroys Hysterica and Tusk bisects him.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: At the end of it, Jill and most of the Norma are dead save for Ange and the survivors of Julio's massacre; Arzenal has returned to the true Earth; and the DRAGONs live in harmony with the norma. As for Sylvia and the Misurugi citizens, they are left without mana and have to survive on their own, forever depriving them of the decadent existence they once had.
  • Offing the Annoyance: Once Embryo's had enough of both Tusk and Ange getting in his way, he resorts to killing them in cold blood.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Ange when Embryo's about to rape her again, followed by Embryo when Ange sings the "Endless Song".
    • Hilda, Salia and Sala when Embryo's forced to use their Ragna-mail to save his hide.
    • Embryo loses his composure for the final time when Hilda, Salia, Ange and Sala destroy Hysterica and when Tusk is going to kill him.
    • Salia comically reacts in this fashion when first meeting Vivian's dad.
  • One Last Smoke: In her dying moments, Jill smokes one last cigarette when she reconciles with Salia.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Besides trying to merge two Earths together, Embryo reveals he's wiped out dozens, if not hundreds, of other Earths and all life on them (many presumably also containing fully sentient non-human life like the DRAGONs) all for the sake of his science experiments.
  • Prepare to Die: When Ange resists Embryo's advances for the last time, Embryo decides to kill her instead.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: As Embryo plans to kill Ange, he says "I've hand selected you out of a millennium's worth of women. But if you're unable to comprehend the depth of my love, you're dead to me!" Only a few seconds later, Embryo is killed by Tusk, who says "Mother, Father, and our people... This is for you!" Then, Ange says "You wanna screw with me again? Give it a few thousand years!" and destroys Hysterica for good.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: While Embryo severed the mana network, he failed in his ultimate goal to use Ange in creating a new humanity and merging the two worlds together.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Shortly before Ange destroys Hysterica, she calls out Embryo for not knowing how to treat women as well as his villainous methods.
  • The Reveal: This is Played for Laughs during the credits montage as Vivian introduces Salia, Mary and Nonna to her father, who just so happens to be in his dragon form.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: Tusk, the norma and the DRAGONs go to Embryo's dimension to rescue Ange.
  • Say My Name:
    • Salia yells "ALEKTRA!" when the latter dies in her arms.
    • When Tusk bisects Embryo, the latter yells "ANGE!" as his last words.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: Jill's failed to get her revenge on Embryo and dies just as her dream of freeing the Norma becomes a reality.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Ange, Hilda, Salia and Sala give a major one to Embryo for his actions against the Norma before killing off Hysterica and its clones.
  • Soiled City on a Hill: What remains of the World of Mana since there's no more mana; the Misurugi inhabitants are forced to live in the remains and fight amongst each other.
  • Theme Music Power-Up: The "Endless Song" is used for Villkiss's entrance as well as the final battle with Embryo.
  • This Cannot Be!: Uttered by Embryo when Ange critically damages Hysterica.
  • Villain Ball: Embryo tries raping Ange while keeping the Villkiss out of reach, which allows Tusk, the norma and the DRAGONs time to mount a final attack and rescue her.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Ange uses her lasers to blast most of Embryo's Hysterica into oblivion.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: With the space-time convergence foiled, Ange no longer considers the Misurugi Empire her home, and decides to start a new life with Tusk.
