Recap / Cross Ange Ep 10 Goodbye From The Gallows

Go To

  • And This Is for...: While she whips Ange, Sylvia uses this as an opportunity to list all of Ange's "transgressions", which includes her inability to walk, her mother's death and generally her sister "being born".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: As Ange lampshades, she hasn't really done anything to deserve being hanged. The only thing she did was kick her former friend in self-defense and then tie them up to prevent being exposed. Outside of that, these are all excuses to kill her on the flimsy basis that she's a norma.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Thanks in no small part to the "Unending Story" song her mother shared, Ange is able to muster what little dignity and grace she can during her execution.
  • Humans Are Bastards: "So these are the 'righteous' citizens of the Misurugi Empire? Pigs! Everyone of them. They're nothing but ignorant, ugly, hateful pigs. Is this the humanity norma like me are supposed to protect?"
  • I Have No Son!: Sylvia gives an indirect one to Ange when she starts singing their mother's song. Rather than acknowledge their shared past with that song, Sylvia pointedly remarks that's her mother's song, and despite also being born to Sophia, Ange somehow has no right to sing it.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Despite Momoko's pleas that Ange is still a good person and doesn't deserve to be executed, the collective people make it clear with a chant to "Hang her up" that they don't care about all that; all they want is to persecute her for the crime of being a norma.
  • Irony: In the midst of her execution, Ange reminisces on how everyone at Arzenal unconditionally accepted her for who she was, as opposed to the "peaceful" citizens of the Misurugi Empire who are about to hang her being born without magic.
  • Morality Chain Beyond the Grave: Ange's last thoughts before her execution would've been nothing but resent towards humanity and its ugly treatment towards her. ...had it not been for the memory of the one human besides Momoko who was ever unconditionally kind to her: her late mother. Thus, Ange is inspired to sing her mother's song as a testament that regardless of what her people are about to do to her, she won't lose sight of her moral compass.
  • Post-Support Regret: When the Misurugi Empire is so gladly chanting for her execution, Ange's feelings towards the people and its society comes down to this. Not only does it disgust her that she wanted to serve this people, but that her entire purpose as a norma comes down to protecting a people that would kill her for the crime of having no mana.
  • Stealth Insult: Before she escapes, Ange ever-so-pleasantly "thanks" her siblings. She thanks Julio for helping her discover who she truly is. As for Sylvia, she thanks her for helping her see how awful humanity really is.
  • Stranger in a Familiar Land: Reconstructed. On one hand, Ange's experience in the Misirugi Empire has alienated her from the place she called home. On the other hand, Ange takes it in stride that she essentially has no home and no family to return to, because it's given her closure. With no former home or loved ones left in the Misirugi Empire, she can move on and focus on making Arzenal her new home.
  • Ungrateful Townsfolk: In a nutshell, Ange lampshades to herself that the Misurugi Empire's attitude towards norma like her is this. Despite that the norma risk their lives on a day to day basis to keep the dragons at bay, they would gladly hang her for the crime of "being born". As such, in her eyes, it cheapens their own lives.
