Demons (2/2)

Directed by Glenn Kershaw
Written by Erica Messer
Reid: "When truth is buried, it grows. It chokes. It gathers such an explosive force that on the day it bursts out, it blows up everything with it." Émile Zola.
With Morgan and Reid shot and in the hospital, Morgan is starting to realize that they and Mills were being set up. The team realizes the only person who wasn't where they should be was Dinah. Jennifer susses out that the UnSubs have Dinah's kid, and that's why she won't talk. While Rossi and Blake are out looking for said kid, Garcia realizes she and a comatose Reid are in danger.

Tropes in this episode

  • Bad Boss: McGregor, the head of the dirty cops, kills two of his deputies for failing to kill Rossi and Blake.
  • Batman Grabs a Gun: Penelope shoots to protect Spence.
  • Bookworm: Discussed about Reid. When she sees Alex in the hospital waiting room, JJ remarks that Reid would have read two or three books in their place.
  • Call-Back: Dinah, the head of the prostitution ring, doesn't trust the FBI. She has a young son, though, who is in danger. Cruz says he and JJ have seen this before, and that the key to getting her to trust them is to save her kid. We saw that in "200".
  • Dirty Cop: The whole police department turns out to be corrupt. The BAU team has to tread lightly once they realize they're essentially "in the lion's den" surrounded by dirty cops, and pretend not to be suspicious, to avoid potentially all being killed.
  • He Knows Too Much: The reason for the murders of nearly all of the local prostitutes. The Dirty Cops had orchestrated the murder of the previous sheriff, and the prostitutes were eyewitnesses to the crime.
  • Mama Bear: When an assassin tries to kill Reid in the hospital by putting some kind of poison into his IV, Garcia shoots the would-be killer (non-fatally, as it turns out) to protect him.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Rossi and Blake are pulled over by two of McGregor's corrupt deputies, who are closing in on them, and grimly prepare for a shootout. By the time McGregor arrives on the scene, both deputies have been non-fatally shot by Blake and Rossi, who are gone. McGregor pulls a You Have Failed Me on his officers for this.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: Morgan gets up and chases the preacher for an extended time despite being shot multiple times. Yes, those bullets landed in his vest, but that doesn't mean he's okay! Then, he gets shot again, this time in the arm. Sort of subverted as that one lands him in a hospital bed. He's still trying to get out as soon as possible, though.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Blake and her husband are revealed to have once had a son together, Ethan, who was born with a disease that ensured he wouldn't live past childhood. Ethan died at nine years old.
  • Put on a Bus: Alex Blake leaves the BAU for good at the end of this episode, since seeing Reid (who reminds her of her deceased son) get shot reawakened some old traumas for her.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Blake resigning from the BAU is the result of her two-year contract with the show being up and CBS deciding not to renew it.note
  • Shout-Out: Garcia puts several Doctor Who figurines near Reids hospital bed
  • Title Drop: A deputy tells JJ that a person like Dinah has to have some demons.
  • Wham Shot: We learn how serious the situation is when the UnSub drags his latest victim into his car — and activates his police sirens.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: When Reid is bleeding out, Blake calls him Ethan, the name of her late son.
  • You Have Failed Me: McGregor sends two of his deputies after Blake and Rossi to kill them. When he arrives later, he finds that the FBI agents injured his cops in the ensuing gun battle before escaping. McGregor proceeds to finish both deputies off before leaving the scene.

Reid: "We must be willing to get rid of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us." Joseph Campbell.
