Tropes in this episode

  • Autopsy Snack Time: The ME du jour is eating a sandwich in the autopsy room while he talks the agents through the mutilated corpses.
  • Big Brother Instinct: The UnSub's big brother was very protective of him and confronted the pedophile who had been going after the UnSub.
  • Creating Life: This is what the UnSub's goal is. He wants to rebuild his brother's body out of body parts from people he kills and then resurrect him using the tornados, because he believes that tornados can both give and take life. Reid compares him to Frankenstein.
  • Frankenstein's Monster: The UnSub is convinced that he can bring his older brother back by making him a new body and exposing it to a tornado (the thing that killed his brother). Frankenstein is brought up by Reid when they finally discern the motive.
  • Literary Allusion Title: The episode title is a reference to The Wizard of Oz. The episode is set in Kansas during tornado season.

Jareau: "Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are." Arthur Golden.
