Tropes in this episode

  • Big Damn Heroes: Hotch shoots Matthew In the Back to save Morgan.
  • Call-Back: Rossi tells Hotch to have his ear looked at after the explosion. In the Season 3 Finale/Season 4 Opener, Hotch had been to close to an explosion too and had problems with his ear for multiple episodes afterward.
  • *Click* Hello: JJ does it to the female UnSub
  • Designated Girl Fight: Downplayed; when JJ and Rossi go to the former's house to save Henry from Izzy, the female assassin, JJ is the one who fights her while Rossi gets the bystanders to safety. It's justified, though, in that the young, athletic JJ is a much better physical fighter than the far-older Rossi, and it's by far the most dangerous fight and one of the most awesome moments in the whole episode, especially when JJ emerges victorious.
  • Fatal Family Photo: Averted, though just barely. We see the photos of Henry and JJ that Will keeps in his wallet, and he almost dies, but is ultimately saved.
  • I Have Your Wife: Well, your son. That's how the UnSubs control Will.
  • It's Personal: Justified, given that JJ's boyfriend is kidnapped by the UnSubs.
  • Just in Time: Prentiss disarms the bomb with just a second to spare.
  • Mama Bear: JJ. She delivers a full on No-Holds-Barred Beatdown against the female UnSub, who's a trained assassin, when her son Henry is endangered.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: When the bomb is only seconds away from killing Will and destroying most of the building he's in, he urges Prentiss to flee so she doesn't die too, but she refuses to leave him to this fate, and ultimately succeeds in disarming the bomb and saving him.
  • Nursery Rhyme: Izzy gets annoyed with Henry, grabs a crayon and sings "ring around the rosy" while drawing circles and making a point of letting the crayon fall on the last line. Henry fails to grasp the sinister undertone, declaring that she's "silly".
  • Put on a Bus: Prentiss takes a job to lead the London office of Interpol and leaves the BAU.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Prentiss's subplot of receiving a job offer from her old boss at Interpol, which she eventually decides to leave the BAU to take, is the result of Paget Brewster choosing to leave the show thanks to the poor treatment she and A.J. Cook received from the CBS executives who fired them in the previous season (though Prentiss ultimately comes back again in Season 12).
  • Tranquil Fury: JJ is pissed about her boyfriend and son being abducted.
  • The Worf Effect: Matthew utterly dominates his fight with Morgan.
  • Working with the Ex: Garcia works together with Kevin Lynch, whom she broke up with midseason. He is clearly worried about her, but there are no hints they'll rekindle their romance.

Prentiss: ''"I've always heard every ending is also a beginning. We just don't know it at the time. I'd like to believe that's true."
