To Hell

Directed by Charles Haid
Written by Chris Mundy
Hotchner: Flannery O'Conner said, "If there were no Hell, we would be like the animals. No Hell, no dignity."
The brother of a missing homeless woman confesses to abducting and murdering ten missing homeless people, in a bid to get the FBI on the case. The BAU proile the UnSub as a sexual sadist who experiments on his victims. Part 1 of 2.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Answer Cut: Hightower's mother asks Hotch what the killer is doing to his victims, to which Hotch responds "It's difficult to say," at which point the show cuts to the UnSub using an electrical saw on a corpse, and then feeding that corpse to the pigs.
  • Artistic License – Geography: Reid describes the part of Canada across the border from Detroit as "nothing but woods" and while it's certainly more rural than Detroit, there is still the city of Windsor, Ontario, which was a metro area of over 300,000 people in 2009.
  • Blatant Lies: Hotch sees through the false confession almost immediately. If you want to pose as a murderer, you shouldn't take such care to avoid killing crossing guards.
  • Crass Canuck: The UnSubs are Canadian, and there's nothing sweet about them.
  • Fed to Pigs: The UnSubs are pig farmers, hence the lack of dumped bodies found.
  • Hope Is Scary: Hightower gets angry with the agents for telling his mother that her daughter might still be alive because even though grief is terrible, you can get past it and move on, but hope keeps you paralyzed.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Subverted. The UnSub eats pigs that were fed humans.
