Reid: "Light thinks it travels faster than anything, but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always gotten there first, and is waiting for it." Terry Pratchett.
An UnSub with DID kills men at a hotel. She emerged as a protector when the boy was horrifically abused in his childhood. Eventually she takes over completely to protect Adam from the consequences of her actions.

Provides examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: The BAU saves the final victim, and also manages to prevent Adam's boss from dying by hospitalizing her in time. However, Adam's alter, Amanda, the one who was actually committing the murders, performs a Split-Personality Takeover on him, and while they are sent to an institution instead of jail in the hopes of getting Adam to reemerge, as of the ending, there are no indications that he'll ever return.
  • Character Focus: For Reid. The fact that the UnSub has Dissociative Identity Disorder reminds him of Tobias Henkel.
  • Flashback Episode: Reid tries to coax the Adam identity back out of the UnSub. We learn how we got there in flashbacks.
  • Split Personality: The killer turns out to be Adam's female alter, Amanda, who exists to protect Adam.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: After the BAU solve the case and arrest Adam (with his Amanda alter currently in control), Amanda permanently suppresses Adam's personality and takes over his body so he'll never have to deal with the consequences of what she did. At the end of the episode, she mocks Reid that Adam is never coming back.

Reid: Stephen King wrote, "Monsters are real, and ghosts are real, too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win."
