Gideon: Euripides said, "When a good man is hurt, all who would be called good must suffer with him."
An UnSub abducts a college girl, Trish Davenport, and kills her boyfriend. He demands that her wealthy family pay to get her back. The girl's identical twin, Cheryl, feels certain that her sister is still alive. The UnSub tries to kidnap her as well, so he'll "have them both". He knows so much about the team that they figure he has to be an FBI agent.
This episode provides examples of:
- Abduction Is Love: The UnSub certainly thinks so.
- Delusions of Eloquence: The UnSub suffers from this, using big words and avoiding contractions to appear smarter.
- Dirty Cop: The UnSub is an FBI agent and a friend of the family.
- Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Gideon realizes who the UnSub is when he remembers that one of the local agents called Mr. Davenport by name, meaning he's had contact with the family socially. Said agent is one of the ones moving Cheryl into a safe house.
- Foreshadowing: When Reid is showing the phone recording gear to Mr. Davenport, one FBI agent makes a point to state how they'll run the trace from the office and only the BAU will be here. That agent turns out to be the Unsub setting up why he wont be on site - he's the one making the call.
- Insult Backfire: The UnSub's tirade against the team basically just amuses them, with Morgan and Reid being the most visibly delighted. (He says Gideon is incapable of noticing that Reid's autistic, to which Reid gets a look on his face that says "I'm pretty sure everyone knows I am.") As noted below, the insults not only backfire by completely failing to ruffle the team, they provide vital clues to the UnSub's identity.
- Irony: In his "Reason You Suck" Speech, the UnSub declares that he doesn't see Elle as a threat. Guess who takes him down?
- I Shall Taunt You: Gideon trolls the UnSub into making a mistake.
- Last-Name Basis: The UnSub is only identified as Agent Chyre.
- Love at First Sight: Not the good kind. All the girls did was look at him and the UnSub became obsessed with them.
- Mad Love: The UnSub is quite adamant that he and Trish should be together, and not even her calling the FBI on him can convince him otherwise.
- One of Our Own: The UnSub is an FBI Agent.
- "Reason You Suck" Speech: The UnSub attempts one, profiling the team. It not only fails, but clues the team in to the fact that he's a FBI agent.
- Super-Speed Reading: Discussed. The victim's father marvels at how fast Reid reads. Reid tells him the unconscious mind can process eleven million bits of information at a time.
- Token Minority: In his "Reason You Suck" Speech, the UnSub accuses Morgan of this, making him chuckle.
- Twin Telepathy: Discussed Trope. The Davenport twins apparently can feel when the other is scared or hurt. Reid even notes that there have been studies about this.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Mr. Davenport and Cheryl aren't exactly happy when Gideon tries to provoke the person holding Trish hostage.
- Yandere: The UnSub suffers from erotomania, and is convinced that the Davenport twins are in love with him. The stressor was when Trish Davenport got engaged.
- Gideon: Euripides said, "When love is in excess, it brings a man no honor, nor worthiness."
