Face Off

Several team members have received offers to turn over a page and go work elsewhere. Rossi again tries to figure out why Lynch let him live, and discusses the matter with his memory of Gideon, who thinks it's because Rossi represents Lynch's father. His mother Roberta Lynch gets released on parole, and the team realizes she wants to find her son as well as kill him and herself.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Olivia can't find her epipen, and Everett enters the room with a wide-eyed expression, leading viewers to believe he means to kill her with her diabetes — but it's just that he found her equipment bag in the kitchen and was returning it. He has no desire to kill Olivia, and she escapes unscathed.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Chekhov's escape route is first mentioned by Garcia as a way to get in, namely the old mineshafts in the area.
  • Double-Meaning Title: Referring both to the confrontation with Lynch, and to Lynch's habit of cutting the faces off his victims.
  • Femme Fatale: Roberta seduced her lawyer. He is heartbroken when he realizes she lied about loving him.
  • Flashback: Everett has flashbacks to when he killed his daughter earlier in the season.
  • Freudian Excuse: Everett's father tried to drown him in the bathtub when he was four.
  • Ironic Echo: When Everett killed Grace he shouted the same thing Devin shouted to him when he was strangling him: "You should never have been born!"
  • Large Ham: Roberta shooting Delvin.
  • Never My Fault: Roberta seeks out Everett's father and tells him that he grew up to be a serial killer and that the memory of Devin trying to kill their four-year-old still haunts her over thirty years later. Devin retorts that his son's crimes prove the point he was trying to make when the boy was four – that he should never have been born.
  • No Kill like Overkill: Roberta shoots Devin 14 times then stabs him 47 times.
  • Replacement Goldfish: The team theorizes that Everett is looking for one for Grace Lynch in Olivia Irvin.
  • Start of Darkness: Everett's is implied to be when his father tried to drown him in the bath tub as a child.
