Seek and Destroy

A gang of thrill-seekers commit charity fraud to find out which homes to invade. In the end it's all about the leader's issues with her parents.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Deadlier Than The Male: Zeke is the one carrying out the murders, but his girlfriend gets off on the violence. She shoots and kills her boyfriend when she takes her parents hostage.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Bea's plan all along was to use her gang to take revenge on the family who rejected her. And she was apparently counting on strength in numbers. But she kills one of her allies, and alienates two of them before she actually gets that revenge. By the time the FBI arrives, Bea is locked in a shoutout with a former best friend, and has nobody to help her. Basically, she destroyed her own gang and undermined her own plan in the process. For once, the agents had little work to do in order to disarm an isolated and cornered UnSub.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The gang may be willing to steal and vandalize people’s homes, but three of them draw the line at murder. The FBI agents eventually learn that only two members of the gang had a previous criminal record, and none of them was previously involved in violent crimes. These guys are not hardened criminals, they are pawns in someone else's revenge scheme.
  • False Friend: Bea, in one of the major twists of the episode. Most of the gang members seem to trust her, with one seeing her as a lover, two seeing her as best friend material, and one seeing her as a surrogate sister. She is actually a cold-hearted sadist, and she barely hesitates to turn against the people who trust her.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Bea, the female UnSub, started the killings because her younger sister received a promotion at her job. Her parents also cut Bea out of the family picture, thus angering her.
  • Plot Twist: At first, we're led to believe the UnSub is the male leader of the gang. Turns out, it's actually his girlfriend.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: One of Bea's main traits. Zeke helped her recover from a recent overdose, and Viv saved Bea's life during the gang's infighting. Bea repays Zeke by killing him, and repays Viv by taking her hostage at gunpoint.
  • White Sheep: Kay is the only one in the gang who starts regretting her actions. She tries to shoot Bea when she takes Viv at gunpoint.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After being arrested and losing what’s left of her gang, Bea screams angrily as she’s being driven away in a squad car.
  • Wham Line: After shooting her boyfriend and unmasking herself, Bea turns to the couple she took hostage and calls them “Mom” and “Dad”.
