An UnSub goes after local social media celebrities, allegedly putting spooky images of Mark Twain on his intended victims' phones.

Tropes in this episode

  • All Men Are Perverts: Charles Lorne, a sporting goods store security guard at the shopping mall visited by the UnSub's victims. He was a voyeur and a potential stalker, though he had nothing to do with the murders.
  • Berserk Button: The UnSub can't stand being mocked, and that's his motivation for the third murder.
  • Glory Seeker: A twisted version. The UnSub did not hate his initial two victims. He craved fame, and figured that killing celebrities would make him famous.
  • Hope Spot: JJ, Morgan and Callahan have almost got the UnSub to surrender and release his hostage...and then a news crew show up and start filming, giving the UnSub the audience he wants. After the takedown, a furious Callahan promptly chews them out for endangering the hostage.
  • Hypocrite: The UnSub (the self-prolaimed "Mirror Man") supposedly found fault in the vanity of the two celebrities which he killed, and the methods which they used for self-promotion. His crimes were actually part of a campaign to gain fame , and he turns out be extremely vain and more than a litle obsessed with his own reflection in the mirror.
  • Pun: Tara Harris's boyfriend says of her Instagram obsession that she's crazy. Tara replies that she can't help her selfie.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Reid suggests the UnSub could be this.
  • Teens Are Monsters: After he's caught, the UnSub assumes he won't do much time, because "kids do the craziest things".
  • Urban Legends: The teenagers tell each other the story of the Mirror Man, who shows up in your selfies and kills you. The UnSub is inspired by this story.
  • You Did the Right Thing: Morgan is forced to shoot the UnSub, who is a teenager, to save a hostage. Afterwards, Hotch tells him this.
Derek Morgan: I shot a kid on national television.
Aaron Hotchner: You shot a serial killer, and if you hadn't, that hostage wouldn't be in surgery now, she'd be dead. You did the right thing.

Morgan: "There is a fellowship more quiet even than solitude, and which, rightly understood, is solitude made perfect." Robert Louis Stevenson.
