Hannah: You need to be fast, fierce, and show some skin! It's all about girl power! You'll love it!

While attending a roller derby with Amy and Hannah, team captain Susie Pickley drops dead during the game after being poisoned.

Tropes:

  • Action Girl: Mona Middlefinger, the captain of the opposing roller derby team.
Mona: Nonsense! I'm never threatened! I'm, like, tough, and I play with the big girls!
  • Alliterative Name: Again, Mona Middlefinger.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Lenny Spitfire was in love with Susie, but he couldn't confess his feelings for her since she was already married
  • Call-Back: Becky Walden reappears as a suspect.
  • Continuity Cameo: The reporter narrating the roller derby is the same one seen in the football game in Case 34 of Grimsborough.
  • High-School Sweethearts: Howard and Susie were together ever since high school. He even calls themselves this.
  • Hollywood Homely: In-Universe example. According to her husband, Susie used to be "homelier" when they were in high school, but changed when she got into rolling.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mona Middlefinger is loud, brash, and aggressive, but in the Additional Investigation you discover that she's been performing rolling tricks in children's hospitals to distract them from the pain.
Russell: But more than this, I'm quite excited about what you discovered, <Player's Name>! Mona really is more than she lets on! She can be selfless and quite nice...
  • Lampshade Hanging: Russell lampshades how long it took you to meet him despite him being part of the team.
Russell: So you're <Player's Name>. I was starting to think you'd never come into my humble office. Russell Crane, profiler at your service.
  • Manchild: Susie's husband Howard is shown to be this in spades, whining that now no one will cook for him and iron his shirts now that she's dead. Even his mother thinks she didn't deserve to be her servant. Fortunately, you get him to turn his life around by the end, convincing him of starting a new life now that his wife and mother are gone.
  • My Beloved Smother: Barbara is this to Howard, treating him like a child and disproving of almost everything he does, hence why she takes matters on her own hands when she starts to think his wife is cheating on him. Russell even calls Howard "smothered."
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Barbara and Susie had a good relationship until the latter started to change after getting into roller derby, seeing her as impure.
  • Playing with Fire: Lenny Spitfire, a Hot-Blooded street performer specialized in fire-breathing and torch-juggling that you meet in this case.
Lenny: Susie was a regular around here. She liked to train here with her roller skates. I thought she was beautiful, so I gave her the torch. I like giving gifts.
Especially gifts that BURN. I like fire. The passion! The heat!
  • Poor Communication Kills: Barbara killed Susie after she saw her talking to Lenny in the plaza, which made her believe she was going to cheat on and leave her son when Susie and Lenny were only friends.
  • Pulled from Your Day Off: The death happens while you, Amy and Hannah are attending a roller derby.
  • Remember the New Guy?: This case introduces Russell, The Profiler at the Pacific Bay Police Department.
Amy: Oh! I know who can help us, <Player's Name>! You haven't met Russell Crane yet, have you? Ooooh, you're in for a treat! He's our profiler. Let's send that star to him!
  • Shout-Out:
    • In the Skating Rink scene, there is artwork of a sinister jester.
    • In the Susie's Garden scene, there is a copy of The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston.
    • Rocket Cow is a parody of Red Bull.
    • In the Additional Investigation, Mona dresses as Peter Pan to perform on a children's hospital.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Becky Walden was assigned by Barbara, the victim's mother-in-law, to follow her around and post it on her blog under the guise of an important company that would give her fame and fortune if she did.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: The killer added Rocket Cow, a highly caffeinated energy drink, to Susie's own drink before the match, which killed her because she was allergic to caffeine.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Howard to Susie. Even Amy can't believe it.
Amy: Susie was married to... you, Mr Pickley? I didn't think that you... that she... erm...
  • Weaponized Allergy: The victim was killed by having her caffeine allergy exploited by the killer.
