"I mean, Nathaniel and Greg clearly had something super important they wanted to tell me, but I never found out what it was."
Rebecca

Rebecca agrees to help out Darryl by offering to babysit and an unexpected guest crashes the evening. Meanwhile, Paula throws a game night.

"Sports Analogies" (sung by Scott Michael Foster and Vincent Rodriguez III)

  • Affectionate Parody: Of a performance by the Rat Pack; the chorus is similar to Van Heusen and Cahn's "High Hopes", as sung by Frank Sinatra in the 1959 movie A Hole in the Head.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: The Rat Pack-like segments are shot in black and white like a '50s concert.
  • Mood Whiplash: The song is an upbeat '50s style song where Josh and Nathaniel sing about how much they love sports...for the first half. Around the halfway part, the song takes a somber turn as they sing about how sports reminds them of their rocky relationships with their dads. After that is introduced, it goes right back to being upbeat as the detail about their dads is also integrated.
  • Slow Clap: At the end, Josh's and Nathaniel's fathers reluctantly clap after their performances.
  • Soccer-Hating Americans:
"We're American men, we like all sports except for soccer
'Cause soccer's just a bunch of foreigners runnin' around"
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Josh and Nathaniel say that men use sports analogies as a way of relating to their distant fathers.

"Hello, Nice to Meet You (Reprise #1)" (sung by Rachel Bloom and Skylar Astin)

"Hello, Nice to Meet You (Reprise #2)" (sung by Rachel Bloom)

  • Parental Love Song: Downplayed. This is sung by Rebecca to her biological daughter Hebby. While she's not going to be a mother figure to the baby, she's now more willing to be involved in her life.

Tropes:

  • Babysitting Episode: Rebecca and Greg babysit Rebecca's biological daughter.
  • Competition Freak: Nathaniel gets weirdly competitive about Paula's Celebrity/Charades law game.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Nathaniel walks into the kitchen doorway just in time to hear Rebecca tell Paula that she slept with Greg.
  • Getting the Baby to Sleep: Greg is great at putting Hebby to sleep, Rebecca is less great.
  • Hiding Behind the Language Barrier: Valencia threatens Hector that "If you ruin this, I will kill you and throw your body in the river," in Spanish.
Heather: I dropped out of Spanish, but I definitely heard the word "kill." Also, "river," so not great.
  • Maternally Challenged: Rebecca, who was initially pretty much the female version of a Glorified Sperm Donor to Hebby, has trouble getting the baby to sleep and spirals because of it. She makes some progress by the end.
  • Shoddy Shindig: Paula's party goes down the crapper. It gets better once she tells the guests that they're celebrating her law school graduation.
