Go To

Short Summary

Faye suddenly leaves the Bebop without warning, taking the ship's money and disabling the controls. While trying to look for her on the net, they come across a private chat which uses Julia's name. Spike, knowing Vicious is the only person to use her name as a password, set out on his own to find him to Jet's anger who promptly throws him off the ship. Meanwhile on the nearby planet Jupiter and the men only city of Callisto, Faye finds herself meeting and becoming enthralled with a saxophone player named Gren.

Main Summary

An old Shaman looks up at the sky to see a falling star. He tells the young boy with him that it is a sign of a warrior returning home.

A meeting is taking place on the Red Dragon Gang's ship. Vicious has received an offer of a drug deal from a former acquaintance on Callisto. The three old wise men running the gang are suspicious of Vicious' loyalty, but they allow him to go to Callisto, with Lin acting as his bodyguard.

Spike wakes up to a note from Faye, saying that she has left the Bebop… and taken all their money with her. Scanning transmissions for signs of Faye, Ed picks up the codename "Julia", which gets Spike's attention (flashbacks show that Julia was the woman who treated his injuries after the incident shown in previous flashbacks). He dashes off to find Julia, refusing help Jet find Faye. A furious Jet kicks him off the crew as he leaves.

Meanwhile at the Blue Crow bar on Callisto, Faye is drowning her sorrows and nursing a cold, listening to the saxophone player, who afterward comes up to her and introduces himself as Gren. He says there are no women in this town, so she should be very careful.

A gang corners Spike, mistaking him for Vicious arriving with the money (which they would like to have). He beats them all up for this slander. Their leader says Gren set up the deal.

Jet lands on Callisto. A bar TV alerts him to a bounty on an escaped convict (who turns out be Gren).

Faye is approached by the same gang that just got beaten up by Spike… and she starts to beats them up too, before Gren helps her escape. Gren takes Faye to her apartment, and she spills her heart out about why she abandoned the Bebop crew. When he has left the room to take a shower, he receives a voicemail from a man Faye instantly recognizes as Vicious. She ambushes Gren in the shower, gun raised, but is confused and alarmed by Gren's appearance: A feminine upper half and a male lower half.

Spike finds Vicious and Lin. As they prepare to fight, Vicious says that "Julia was here, right in this town". Lin stands between them and refuses to move. Lin shoots Spike and they leave him for dead.

  • Berserk Button: A gang of opportunists mistake Spike for Vicious when they hear him asking around for Gren. Spike is less than flattered.
Spike: You think I'm Vicious?! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT VICIOUS IS!!!
    • Shortly after beating the gang up, Spike seems to calm down somewhat after getting the information he wants from the final gang member. It's only when the his final victim says that Julia "sounds like some sleazy wench's name" does he follow up with a punch that knocks the man out.
  • Bowdlerization: The scene of Faye confronting Gren in the shower had all instances of his butt and breasts removed with tasteful cropping and reframing. This is very noteworthy because, at the time, the only way to remove nudity in an anime on Cartoon Network was either to cut the scene if the scene was just meaningless fanservice or put a Digital Bikini on the naked character if the scene had some plot relevance. This episode took a third option, and was all the better for it, as it still implied that there was something weird about Gren's nudity, because they kept in Faye muttering, "A woman?" then looking down, seeing that Gren had male genitals, and whimpering, "Which one are you?".
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Faye leaves on her own, then Jet refuses to let Spike return when he goes off to find Vicious.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle / One-Man Army: Spike vs the muggers.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Gren when Faye looks over the pictures of his travels and notices the "woman" in the picture and then there's her discovery when she confronts him in the shower.
  • Gonk: The crossdressers Spike runs into.
  • Gratuitous Russian: Some signboards on Callisto are in correct Russian, but some are just collections of Cyrillic or even simply Cyrillic-looking characters.
  • Our Hero Is Dead: Spike is seemingly "killed" at the end of the episode.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal: After hearing Vicious on Gren's answering machine. Faye confront Gren in the shower and... notices he has breasts then looks downward and sees he has genitals confirming he's a man. He explains in the next episode that he was subjected to experiments during his imprisonment which messed with his biology.
