Tropes for "The Last of the Starmakers"
- Birth-Death Juxtaposition: The episode ends with the baby starmakers finally hatching and returning to their home in space. Meanwhile, their mother concludes her own life by turning into a small, lovely patch of wild flowers.
- Downer Beginning: The episode seems to begin happily enough, with the Space Squid and his mate making stars and celebrating the unhatched clutch of babies. All's well, until a space whale comes along and starts sucking everything in. Afraid to see his family eaten, the Space Squid sacrifices himself, leaving his tearful mate and their unhatched babies to escape as the last of the starmakers.
- The Guards Must Be Crazy: Courage gets past some guards carrying space squid eggs by carrying them like balloons while skipping and licking a lollipop, the guards brush it off. Subverted when they soon surround him as he attempts to infiltrate the mother squid's containment through a tank of vital fluids.

- Greed: Eustace is driven to turn the Space Squid over to the military if only to be handsomely rewarded.
- Laser-Guided Karma: For betraying the Space Squid and her unborn babies to the military, Eustace learns the hard way that the money he was given was actually untested explosives.
- Papa Wolf: The male Starmaker had a choice between letting his mate and babies get sucked into the hungry space whale's mouth, or blocking the creature's mouth and getting eaten in the process. Not willing to live with losing his beloved family, he chooses the latter.
- Supernaturally Marked Grave: When the dying Starmaker's eggs have hatched safely, she is able to die in peace, and a flower garden grows where her body dissolved into the earth.
