"It helps if you visualize. Imagine you're at the Tour de France... watching from the sidelines on a stationary bike."

A Plot: Karen joins a spin class for exercise, but is shocked to find out that Hank is the instructor. She also gets into hot water when the other students in the class, including Davis, label her a "teacher's pet".

B Plot: Corner Gas gets a new cordless phone, but Wanda is adamant that the handset must be fully charged before use. Oscar, however, assumes the handset is a cell phone and takes it for his own personal use, wandering all over town with it. Wanda ends up having to chase him down to get it back.

C Plot: Emma and the ladies of Dog River are putting together a calendar and Lacey butts in to be a part of it. She gets a rude awakening when she finds out it's a nude calendar but pretends to be okay with it to avoid seeming like a prude. She tries recruiting others, who are all too eager to participate.

Tropes Referenced:

  • Ambiguous Syntax:
Brent: [Hearing a weird chirping sound] Are there birds in here?
    Wanda: It's the phone.
Brent: There are birds in the phone?
  • Bait-and-Switch: Lacey originally thinks the ladies don't want her in the calendar because they still consider her an outsider. Emma informs her the real reason is because they didn't think she'd want to appear naked.
  • Chubby Chaser: When Davis sees Karen eating fattening food, he expresses his opinion that he likes women "with a little meat on their bones". This has a negative effect on Karen, who decides to start exercising.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
Lacey: What can I get you guys?
Hank: I'll have the tofu salad, but replace the tofu with chicken.
Lacey: So ... the chicken salad?
Hank: No, that's not as healthy.
  • Creator Cameo: Staff writer Norm Hiscock is the customer whom Lacey mistakes for the photographer.
  • Curse Cut Short: A visual one. Attempting to escape her Teacher's Pet status, Karen takes out a bar of soap and writes on Hank's windshield "MR. YARBO IS A DIC" before Hank shows up and catches her.
  • Double Meaning: When Davis sees Karen looking at an ad for a spin class, he initially thinks it's about spinning plates.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: After Lacey strips in the Ruby, Wanda enters chasing Oscar down. Wanda gets the phone back, then gives a nude Lacey an impressed look and a thumbs-up.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: This is the idea behind the Ladies of Dog River calendar.
Emma: Not completely naked. We're tastefully covered up, I mean, by a fence or a door.
Fitzy's grandma: I'm going to be in a canoe.
    • Also happens with Lacey and objects in the Ruby (this is a broadcast TV show; the customer's travel mug keeps us from seeing her from the neck down in frontal shots, while a lampshade blocks her butt from behind).
  • Humble Pie: For Lacey. BIG time.
  • It's a Long Story: Played with. The story about Hank becoming the spin class instructor is presented as complex, with a fade away while he tells Lacey. Then Karen asks about the story and we find out he just got a phone call while watching TV.
    Karen: [Unimpressed] Wow.
Hank: I mean, you can't make this stuff up!
  • Naked People Are Funny: When confronting Emma at the Ruby for assuming she'd back out of the calendar, Lacey suddenly gains courage and strips down in front of Emma and who she thinks is the photographer. Emma then informs her that the photographer cancelled. The man is just a random customer who wants some coffee for the road. Lacey can only stand there clad only in shame, confusion, and her sandals.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: The customer has a reaction of total bemusement to Lacey stripping down to her birthday suit.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl:
    • Wanda and Karen seem to have no qualms about doffing their clothes in public on the spot the moment they are informed about the calendar. Only Lacey's insistence stops them.
    • Subverted when Lacey herself disrobes — she says at first that "it's kinda liberating" until Emma tells her the photographer was unavailable.
  • Short-Distance Phone Call: Oscar calls Emma while he's pulling into the driveway, then continues the call into the house. After he hangs up and she asks what the phone is, he re-dials their house just to give her the answer.
  • Shout-Out: Hank quotes The Breakfast Club after Karen apologizes for making him quit as spin teacher. It's not lost on Karen, who points it out.
Hank: Rented it last night. Great movie. See you around, kiddo. Don't you forget about me!
    Karen: I get it!
[Hank pumps his fist while music from the movie plays.]
  • Serious Business: Wanda making sure the new phone gets fully charged.note  Brent teases her about it.
  • Stern Teacher: Hank is pretty tough on his spin class, other than Karen. Hank's replacement teacher is even tougher.
  • Teacher's Pet: Karen is accused of being one in spin class. Lacey proudly admits to having been one in school.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: No matter how many times he is told otherwise, Oscar remains utterly convinced Corner Gas's new cordless phone is a cell phone, not a landline. This is despite the fact that the previous phone was also a cordless and Oscar presumably made no such mistake with that one. He takes it for himself and gets confused when people call looking for the gas station. He even tries using it to call the gas station himself and complains that he keeps getting a busy signal. At the end of the episode, Brent replaces it with a corded phone, claiming it to be idiot-proof. He's wrong, as Oscar tries to take it to use as a cell phone anyway and ends up ripping it out of the wall when he gets in his car with it and drives away.
  • Thumbtack on the Chair: Karen tries this prank on Hank in an attempt to prove to the rest of spin class that she's not a teacher's pet. Unfortunately, not only does Hank notice it right away, he also assumes Karen is covering for someone else when she fesses up. He punishes everybody but Karen, earning her more ire from her peers.
