Numbuh 3 messes with the Sanban house's thermostat, turning it into a volcanic netherworld. While Numbuhs 1, 2, and 5 launch a rescue mission, Numbuh 4 is stuck putting up with 3's father Kani.
Now loading tropes:
- Book Ends: The story begins and ends with someone messing with the thermostat to turn their place of residence into a place that's either too hot or too cold to handle.
- Both Sides Have a Point: Kani isn't wrong that heat costs money and that the thermostat isn't a toy. However, considering that the house is so cold that there is ice in various parts of the housenote , Numbuh 3 was pretty justified in wanting to turn the heat up.
- Clothing Damage: Numbuh 3's nightdress gets burned from using her powers. Notably her usual long sleeves that cover her hands are burned away up to her elbows.
- Evil Costume Switch / Evil Makeover: Numbuh 3 is given a volcanic transformation when she turns up the thermostat: her nightdress is burned up with the sleeves going up to her elbows and the hem of the shirt going up to the bellybutton, her pajama pants are reduced to shorts, her slippers resemble volcanic demons, her green blanket has become a cape and she gains fiery hair and eyes. After her teammates get her and the house back to normal by turning down the thermostat, who knows what Kani turned into after he turned down the treehouse's thermostat...
- Going Native: The longer he stays in Sector V's treehouse, the more Kani acts like a kid/teen, to the point that Numbuh 4 is acting more like an adult than he is.
- Here We Go Again!: After Numbuhs 1, 2, and 5 rescue Numbuh 3 from her house and prevent the volcano from erupting, Numbuh 4 bursts into the scene, revealing that Kani found the treehouse's thermostat and made it so cold it's now frozen inside a gigantic ice cube.
- Ironic Echo: It's one thing when Kani snaps "The thermostat is not a toy!" It's another thing when Numbuh 3 (under the influence of heat delirium and Drunk with Power) says the same thing verbatim.
- Lethal Lava Land: The Sanban Residence's transformation into a volcano ready to erupt, thanks to Numbuh 3 turning up the thermostat.
- Manchild: A fully-relaxed Kani isn't all that different from a lazy teenager.
- Obnoxious In-Laws: Many fans have interpreted Numbuh 4 and Mr. Sanban's interactions with each other in the episode as this (see YMMV-page for more details).
- Only Sane Man: Numbuh 4, of all people, becomes this to Numbuh 3's dad.
- Playing with Fire: Numbuh 3. Her fire powers are similar to Father's.
- Rump Roast: As Numbuhs 1, 2 and 5 enter her house to try and turn down the thermostat before it erupts, Numbuh 1 gets his butt set on fire.Numbuh 1: Hey, who's cooking hamburgers?
Numbuh 5: I don't know about hamburgers, but your buns are burning! - Swapped Roles: In his stay at Sector V's treehouse, Kani acts similar to a bored teenager instead of an adult. Numbuh 4 becomes the "adult" who tries to reign him in.
- Temporarily a Villain: Numbuh 3 when she undergoes a volcanic transformation.
- Tempting Fate: Numbuh 2. Twice."How hot/cold can it be?"
- Thermostat Tamper Tantrum: In "Operation: H.O.T.S.T.U.F.F.", Numbuh 3's father scolds her for trying to touch the thermostat, even if it is unbearably cold (for her, anyways). The plot kickstarts when Numbuh 3 set it to such extreme heat that it could erupt like a literal volcano, which the team has to enter to prevent it. Meanwhile, when Numbuh 4 stays behind to watch Numbuh 3's father, he found the thermostat at the treehouse, setting the temperature so low that the tree became an ice cube.
- The Thing That Would Not Leave: Kani becomes this to Sector V, especially Numbuh 4. Numbuh 1 fears that if the Sanban family house doesn't get restored back to normal, then both Mushi and Genki will also move into their treehouse permanently.
- Too Much Information: When Numbuh 2 says the heat's making his underwear stick to his butt, Numbuh 5 has this reaction.Numbuh 5: (disgustedly) Why do you insist on saying things that Numbuh 5 can't ever un-hear?
- Volcano Lair: The Sanban residence becomes this when Numbuh 3 turns up the thermostat.
