Peril

Father calls in the Interesting Twins from beneath the Mountain to hunt down and eliminate the Japanese Kids Next Door. That's easier said than done as their only lead is Numbuh 3.

Date of Mission: May 28, 2004

Now loading tropes:

  • Aside Glance: After getting kicked in the face by the twins, the dog makes a fuss and ends up opening the door to his cage. He proceeds to smirk at us before heading over to maul the twins.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: The Interesting Twins do have Master of Disguise down to an artform. While they suffer all kinds of slapstick, what truly brings them down is their opponents being even better at disguises than they are. Sector V completely fools them by posing as Numbuh 3's grandmother, while the Japanese KND are revealed to have been disguised as various side characters seen throughout the trip.
  • Butt-Monkey: The Interesting Twins making Numbuh 4 look like the luckiest kid alive.
  • Contrived Coincidence: The first of many inconveniences the Interesting Twins deal with is trying to find Numbuh 3 in a Japanese airport when it's Sombrero day. They even lampshade this.
  • Didn't Think This Through: After suffering several humiliations, the sister loses her temper and summons their biggest battleship to attack Numbah 3...in the middle of the highway. Cue a semi-truck running over it and smashing it to pieces.
  • The Dog Bites Back: A quite literal example occurs when the dog at the airport that the twins kick for barking manages to escape and attack them in retaliation.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The brother only loses his composure after his sister is reduced to crying her eyes out. He vows to make the KND pay for this.
  • Evil Laugh: The sister becomes increasingly prone to this, as her sanity degrades. The brother (while not above laughing at the start of the episode) finds her doing it now a little disturbing.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: Both twins have half their faces slightly framed in shadow at all times.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: The Interesting Twins do this regularly, though some occasions indicate the brother is deliberately interrupting the increasingly unhinged sister to try to keep her focused on their assignment.
Sister: This girl is beginning to try my—!
Brother: Patience is a virtue, sister.
  • Foreshadowing: The dog is a lot smarter than one would expect a rabid animal to be. Sure enough, the ending reveals it was a disguise for two of the Japanese KND members.
  • From Bad to Worse: The brother of the Twins think that their defeat can't be any worse. Then, it turns out the pedestrians and dog that helped Numbuh 3 along the way are actually the Japanese KND who are ready to kick some ass.
  • Gave Up Too Soon: Sister destroys the radio to contact Father's Ninja Army, after seeing Numbuh 3's "grandmother".
  • Humiliation Conga: The Interesting Twins went through a roller coaster of pain and misery: They got mauled by a dog (which turn out to be a KND operative in disguise), getting smacked around by various factors, lose their most destructive ship, get taken to the dump by a garbage truck after losing their lollipop tracker, and have a rock slide drop on them.
  • It's Personal: After one painful experience too many, the sister gets to the point of wanting to forgo their mission and just assault Numbuh 3 for all the grief she's suffered.
  • Kick the Dog: The Interesting Twins literally do this to the same dog Numbuh 3 just petted a few seconds ago, though this causes the dog to attack them.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Just as the twins expect to have an easy time of tracking Numbuh 3 at the airport — due to her wearing a sombrero — they see it's Free Sombrero Day and that everyone is taking part. The twins question why a Japanese airport would celebrate such an occasion.
  • Little "No": The sister's defeated reaction to the oncoming boulder.
  • Logo Joke: The normal transition logo is replaced with an Interesting Twins-themed logo.
  • Look Behind You: The Interesting Twins pull off this trick in order to board a train.
    Conductor: The ticket, please.
    Brother: Look!
    Sister: Mount Fuji!
Conductor: (looks away) Huh? Where? (the twins sneak onto the train)
  • Low Clearance: When the Twins end up in the trunk of a taxi while trying to follow Numbah 3, the sister gets so angry that she crawls onto the roof of the car to attack her, not even caring about the mission anymore. But when her brother tries to get her to calm down, she's so busy looking at him and ranting that she doesn't hear his warning about an oncoming tree branch above the taxi until they smack into it.
  • Moral Myopia: Played for Laughs. The brother is outraged that Sector V made his sister cry from ruining their attempts to destroy the KND.
  • Sanity Slippage: Repeated failures and slapstick cause the sister to become increasingly unhinged, sloppy, and hammy.
  • Tempting Fate: Lying on the ground in a field after everything they've been through, the brother remarks that it at least can't get any worse. The Japanese KND then reveal themselves and get ready to beat them up.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: The twins have a number of these reactions ahead of some misfortune, such as when they see the dog is on the train and ready to maul them once again.
  • Totem Pole Trench:
    • The Interesting Twins from Beneath the Mountain use this early on with the traditional trenchcoat-and-fedora style.
    • Later, Sector V pulls this off in order to trick The Interesting Twins into believing they are Numbuh 3's grandmother.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The sister of the Twins ends up crying her eyes out after what Numbuh 3 unintentionally (probably) put them through.
  • We Will Meet Again: The brother promises this, while berating Sector V for making his sister cry. Sector V is less than impressed, to say the least.
  • Wham Shot: The dog, train conductor, taxi driver, and old lady reveal themselves to be the Japanese KND.
  • Women Are Wiser: Averted. Each "minor setback" makes the sister more and more unhinged before she is literally crawling through garbage while shouting maniacally. By contrast, the brother retains more composure and even gets spooked by her behavior.
    Brother: Sister, calm yourself!
Sister: [grabbing him] Don't tell me to—!
[Both get scooped up by a garbage truck]
  • You Monster!: The brother shouts this at Sector V, after his sister starts crying her eyes out.
