Recap / Code Prime - R1: Rebellion, 19 "What is Evil?"

Go To

With Shirley knowing his identity as Zero, Lelouch, C.C., Rai, and Bumblebee pursue her to Narita, where they encounter Mao, a former contractor of C.C. and to make matters worse, he also has Geass! Meanwhile, Ratchet, Ohgi, and Tamaki found a wounded Villetta, and take her back to the Ark, as Suzaku and Dreadwing investigate a string of killings in the Shinjuku ghetto, only to face off against Airachnid.

  • Adaptational Explanation: In Prime, when explaining how Bumblebee lost his voice, Ratchet stops just short of revealing that he was the one who treated Bumblebee. Here, he outright tells Tamaki and Ohgi he was the one who failed to save Bumblebee's voice.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Thanks to his time spent with the Autobots, in particular Optimus, Lelouch does not erase Shirley's memories like in canon, and instead tells her the truth. Erasing her memory would make him no different to his father.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • When Mao was about to kill Shirley, Rai utilizes his Geass (which unlike Lelouch's, works based upon hearing alone, instead of both sight and sound) for the first time, causing Mao to drop his gun. Then Bumblebee manages to backhand Mao away, breaking the mind reader's right arm and most of his ribs in the process.
    • Darlton and Guilford show up just in time to save Suzaku and Dreadwing from Airachnid.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • While she doesn't do anything about it, Cornelia is still horrified by the horrors Airachnid's inflicted upon the Elevens.
    • Considering how horrible Charles had been to Lelouch, Mao can't fault him for looking up to Optimus as a father figure.
  • For the Evulz: Airachnid butchers dozens of Japanese civilians in Shinjuku, because she was bored, much to Suzaku's outrage.
  • Hannibal Lecture: Suzaku is on the receiving end of one from Airachnid, who calls him out on siding with the Decepticons, as she used to be one, and Suzaku is an idealist who is siding with a Hope Crusher that destroyed his own homeworld and ultimately would see Earth burn if he could defeat the Autobots. It's the first time in the story that Suzaku ever shows uncertainty with the path he chose.
  • Hourglass Plot: This chapter has Lelouch and Suzaku essentially going through what the other faced in the previous chapter, with Lelouch facing something that strengthens his convictions to fight, while Suzaku finally begins to realize the path he undertook was wrong.
  • Internal Reveal: Shirley is told everything about Lelouch and Nunnally's identities as former royalty, Lelouch and Rai's reasons for fighting, and their involvement in the Black Knights and the Autobots. At the end of the chapter, she has the honor of meeting the Autobots for the first time - especially Optimus Prime.
  • No More Lies: Lelouch vows to tell Shirley and Nunnally the truth - which he does for Shirley after she was rescued from Mao's clutches.
  • Parental Substitute: This chapter marks the first open acknowledgment of Lelouch viewing Optimus as a father figure (though its Mao that reveals this while reading Lelouch's thoughts).
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left:
    • Mao only has a brief chance to see C.C. before Bumblebee's Energon barrage sends him packing.
    • Airachnid takes advantage of Guilford and Darlton showing up to face her and scans one of the helicopters to make a speedy getaway.
