Recap / Code Lyoko XANA Awakens Part 1

Go To

Part one of a prequel to explain how the gang all met, how the super computer was activated, and what the first XANA incident was.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Call-Forward: This being a prequel to the series, there's a lot of Worldbuilding references that this prequel references:
    • Jim talks about his time as a war veteran in excruciating detail, leading to laughter and Ulrich saying that he'd be better off just not talking about it. This becomes a Running Gag in Seasons 2 and especially in Season 3 where Jim refusing to talk about his former careers turns up Once an Episode in a roundabout way.
    • Odd starts calling Jérémie "Einstein", something he started doing more in Season 2, but did do sparingly in Season 1.
    • Ulrich's fear of heights is alluded to, a plot point in Season 2's Vertigo.
    • Odd's hair is initially in a semi-dreadlocks, semi-short style. The hairstyle changes when Odd and Ulrich discovers Lyoko, and he changes it accordingly in the following episode to make it look more his Lyoko Warrior style.
    • Jérémie's pledges his promise to Odd and Ulrich to shut down the Super Computer, as referenced multiple times in Season 1.
    • Aelita thinks she's an AI, due to her lack of memories, and Jérémie is convinced that because she's a super-advanced AI with emotions like humans, she can materialize on Earth.
    • Ulrich and Yumi meet, and it's Love at First Sight, though neither talk about it. This, of course, becomes the consistent side-arc for the rest of the series.
  • Continuity Snarl:
    • Odd uses a shield ability on Lyoko, despite this ability not showing up until Season 2.
    • Jérémie is shown to have turned the super computer on himself, when in a earlier episode, he claimed that all the Lyoko Warriors turned it on.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: Jérémie becomes determined in materializing Aelita on Earth one day after meeting her.
  • Fainting: Sissi faints when she hears that Odd brought Kiwi into Kadic.
  • Foregone Conclusion: If it was the first episode, we could be lead to believe that Sissi is going to join the Lyoko Warriors, however, this being a prequel, we already know that her memory will eventually be wiped out by a return to the past.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Jérémie calls Odd by his full name when he accidentally virtualizes him onto Lyoko. Unlike most examples, he's asking if he's okay.
  • Last-Name Basis: Jérémie and Ulrich address each other by their last names, showing that, while they're on good terms, they aren't exactly friends at this point. Implied to be the case with Odd, even though Ulrich doesn't say his full name (Odd Della Robbia) until he's accidentally virtualized.
  • Luminescent Blush: Ulrich and Yumi when they first meet fighting.
  • New Transfer Student: Odd ends up being this the day after the Supercomputer is turned on.
  • No Name Given: An inversion. At the beginning, Aelita does not remember her name, however, she also does not like Jérémie adressing her as "AI" or "Artificial Inteligence", so she asks him do call her something else. Jérémie comes up with the name "Maya", and Aelita likes it.
  • Shock and Awe: XANA's first attack when the supercomputer is turned on is to shock Jérémie, and take control of his ball-catching robots.
  • Worldbuilding: The whole point of the prequel is to explains the origins of how Jérémie and company meet, as well showing various unexplained things the series' later relies on:
    • Jérémie finds the super computer after doing some dumpster diving in the factory for making robots.
    • The costumes of the Lyoko Warriors are theorised by Jérémie as the super computer reading their subconscious and interpreting appropriate costumes for them. Though Odd's costume is bizarre here, and even he's unsure why he has a Cat Motif for his costume, despite him owning a dog.
    • Aelita was first called Maya, but the following episode has her remember her name as "Aelita".
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: After Odd suggests that Sissi's accusation of sacrificing Kiwi is a result of her "watching too many horror movies", Sissi then suggests the factory is "the tomb of an ancient pharaoh". Later, as the scanner around Odd closes, Sissi screams that Odd "is going to be mummified" when he gets accidentally virtualized.
  • You Watch Too Much X: Odd accuses Sissi of watching too many horror movies after she suggests sacrificing Kiwi
