Recap / Code Lyoko S 3 E 6: "The Pretender"

Go To

A flock of XANA-possessed crows strike at the gang in order to prevent them from entering Lyoko. Meanwhile, Ulrich tricks a young admirer of Yumi into believing that she will like him if he follows her around all the time.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Ulrich towards Yumi, however, this time the other 'competitor' for Yumi's affections isn't William but Johnny, Hiroki's friend. This leads Ulrich to give Johnny false romantic advice that will irritate Yumi. The rest of the group calls him out on this.
  • Curse Cut Short: As XANA-Aelita tries to hit Ulrich, he shouts out what sounds like a "Holy—!" as he tries to dodge.
  • Feathered Fiend: XANA's attack in this episode consists of possessing murders and storytellings of crows to attack the Lyoko Warriors.
  • Homage: XANA's attack is one to the Alfred Hitchcock 1963 film The Birds. The scene where the possessed crows are perched above a wall watching the Lyoko Warriors walking towards the factory is eerily similar to the flock that was spying on the school playground (even framed in a similar way), then another scene where Yumi is attacked by the crows is very reminiscent of the iconic scene towards the end of Hitchcock's film where Melanie is attacked by a horde of birds inside a phone booth (a garden shed in Yumi's case), with both scenes being similar, and unlike Melanie who survived the assault, Yumi almost dies and is barely saved at the last second and taken to the hospital. Odd lampshades this, alluding to the film and thinking it wasn't that scary, but he quickly takes it back when the crows start attacking.
  • Human Shield: Ulrich uses a possessed Aelita as one to protect him from the flying Manta. It doesn't hold up for long as XANA-Aelita elbows him in the gut.
  • Improvised Weapon: When the Hornets destroy his sabre, Ulrich uses some rock fragments created by XANA-Aelita's attack to destroy the Hornets and Manta.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: After Rhymes on a Dime below, Odd and Ulrich assume fighting stances, ready to fight the crows. However, they soon become outmatched and they take cover in the elevator.
  • Precocious Crush: Hiroki's friend Johnny has one on Yumi.
  • Running Gag: Jim was once a secret service agent working in supernatural occurrences and paranormal activity, but he doesn't want to talk about it; Highly classified and all that.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: When the previously-docile possessed crows start becoming hostile toward Ulrich, Odd, Jeremie, and Aelita on the bridge to the factory, Ulrich has this to say:
Ulrich: We'll delay them. Get to the elevator. See you later.
  • Shout-Out: When Jeremie gets pecked on the head by one of the crows, he says, "I saw the sign!"
