Recap / Code Lyoko S 2 E 19

Go To

The episode begins with XANA activating a tower in the ice sector. Meanwhile, Jeremie is awoken the Super Scans alarm, but is told that there is not activated tower. Then next morning, Jeremie ponders over this, while Odd searches for a video he made to give a celebrity who is visiting the school, Thomas Vincent, TV for short. He is revealed to be a self-centered jerk, and interrupts the science class for a documentary. He attempts to skew the documentary he is doing to show France's students as lazy, do-nothing slackers, and about how the school system there is failing. Odd is offended that TV didn't want to see his film, while Jeremie receives another Super Scan alert and sends the team to Lyoko. They are attacked by a squadron of Hornets, but the team dispatches them rather easily. When the team arrives at the tower, it deactivates itself. This happens immediately in the ice sector. While TV takes the majority of the available lunch, XANA activates another tower, and causes a massive snowstorm. Yumi, Odd and Ulrich are trapped at school, while Jeremie and Aelita are stuck in the factory. While fun at first, it quickly becomes dangerous, and the students are gathered in the school by Jim and Mr. Delmas, as well as Suzanne in an off-screen instance. Sissi and Herb are stuck outside, but sneak into TV's car and turn on the heater, thanks to the fact that Jim left the keys in the ignition.

The temperature quickly drops to 40 below zero. Yumi, Odd, and Ulrich head to the factory, but run into TV, Herb, and Sissi. After sending them inside, Yumi saves Ulrich from a falling tree, but is trapped beneath. Odd heads to the factory while Ulrich attempts to free Yumi. He attempts to use chains, but they break and he gives up, instead concentrating on keeping Yumi awake and alive. Meanwhile, Aelita is sent to Ice Barrier, but is ambushed by the Scyphozoa and several flying Mantas, outside of Sector 5 for the first time ever. Odd makes it to the factory just in time to save Aelita. The school boiler cuts out, and people begin to freeze. The mantas release a field of flying mines, which Odd navigates through, then sets off to kill one of the mantas. Aelita makes her way into the tower just as a very sickly Ulrich tears up. He whispers, "I need you," to Yumi, who is unresponsive. Upon deactivating the tower, Jeremie activates a return trip, barely saving Yumi. TV gets his "just desserts", as the cook dumps his lunch on him.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Batman Gambit: XANA here more so than in most other episodes of Season 2. XANA keeps activating and deactivating towers in an effort to make it look like Jeremie's scanner has a bug, then causes a snowstorm that traps Aelita and Jeremie at the factory who would want to deactivate the tower, which would force Aelita to Lyoko alone, and be free to drain her of her memories with a Scyphozoa. The one thing that would scuttle his plan is the other warriors not leaving for lunch.
  • Big "NO!": Ulrich cries one when he finds that Yumi's no longer breathing, and his cell phone had lost its charge, meaning he can't get help.
  • Big Storm Episode: XANA plans to make a snowstorm to cut off Jeremie and Aelita from Yumi, Odd and Ulrich.
  • Broken Pedestal : Odd towards Thomas when refuses to watch his DVD and proves to be a complete jerk.
  • Crying Wolf: Invoked by XANA, who repeatedly activates and deactivates towers on Lyoko to run the heroes on a wild goose chase and lower their guard. When Jeremie hesitates on one tower's activation on the assumption that it's another false alarm, that's when XANA strikes for real.
  • Curse Cut Short: Thomas Vincent in this scene:
TV: This cannot be happening! What’s with this bunch of—
    (bell rings)
    Students: YAAAAAAAAAAY!
  • Dub Name Change: In France, Thomas Vincent is named Jean-Claude Tourcoing.
  • Hate Sink: Hoo boy, there is literally nothing redeeming about Thomas Vincent, especially after he steals Milly and Tamiya's blanket while the poor girls were on the verge of freezing to death (fortunately for them, his camerawoman Edna wasn't just going to let him to that). He makes James Finson from Season One seem like a humble choir boy (who, to be fair, did have his kind moments).
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: A tree collapses and Yumi knocks Ulrich out of the path and takes the blow herself, rendering her stuck. Ulrich stays behind to get her out, but all his attempts fail due to the worsening weather.
  • Hostile Weather: XANA controls the snowstorm, and starts a blizzard to cut off the gang at the school with Aelita and Jeremie at the factory.
  • In-Series Nickname: Everyone calls Thomas Vincent "TV", as he... well, works in television.
  • Jerkass: Thomas Vincent has an It's All About Me complex, and never changes. He fires his assistant for refusing to come out into the cold to do a story about the strange weather changes. He hogs the food for himself and doesn't consider the students and staff. He steals a blanket from a shivering Milly and Tamiya too, meaning there is no redeeming this guy.
  • Kill It with Ice: Yumi gets trapped underneath a fallen tree, and nearly dies from the cold weather.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Thomas Vincent takes a blanket from a freezing Milly and Tamiya. Edna promptly slaps him out and gives it back. After the return trip, Rosa the lunch lady pours meatballs and gravy on him.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When XANA launches his weather attack, Jeremie speaks of him being "back to his old self". He's referring to the fact that XANA is no longer just activating and deactivating towers without doing anything with them. However, after a number of second season episodes where the attacks involve either possession or polymorphic specters, this episode's attack is rather reminiscent first season by comparison.
  • Manipulative Editing: Thomas asks a student at random what their school report score is, and asks Jeremie, who says 99.87 out of 100. He then tells the camerawoman to cut, and asks the class for someone with a below average score, to which he picks Odd instead. His goal was to show off the school in a bad light, of course.
  • Not So Above It All: Mr. Delmas, the unruffled no-nonsense principal, pelts Jim with a snowball, hiding it under a silent guise of "It wasn't me."
  • Running Gag: Jim having past multiple jobs comes up again, this time instead of a general in the army, it's a warden of some kind. He still doesn't want to talk about it.
  • Think Happy Thoughts: Odd tries to think of warm things as motivation to get to the factory.
  • Thunder Equals Downpour: The accompanying shots of the clouds show this before the snow hits.
  • Weather Manipulation: XANA's attack for this episode is making it snow, trapping the students inside the school, and more crucially, Aelita and Jeremie at the Factory.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Even though the Lyoko Warriors prevented his attempt to steal Aelita's memory, due to the severity of XANA's blizzard (especially with Yumi about to freeze), they were forced to employ a Return to the Past, meaning XANA's power would increase.
