Recap / Code Geass: Paladins of Voltron, Chapter 39, "The Legend Begins"

Go To

With The Reveal of Zarkon being the original Black Paladin now in the open, Allura and Coran reveal the origins of Voltron.

  • Adaptational Intelligence: Due to The Reveal of the origins of Voltron in this chapter, the Paladins figure out (or at least surmise) that Zarkon's connection to the Black Lion is what allows him to track them, something they didn't figure out for a few more episodes in canon.
  • Adaptation Distillation: In Legendary Defender, the origins of Voltron aren't revealed until the third Season Finale. Here, they're revealed at roughly the midway point of the fanfic's second season.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Zarkon is given another reason for wanting access to Voltron - he wants to use it to open a new rift between realities, potentially allowing him to create more weapons like Voltron.
    • The creatures from the Quintessence Dimension are never given any explanation as to what they are. Here, it's implied that they are living embodiments of destruction.
  • Foil: This chapter emphasizes just how similar Lelouch and Zarkon can be, as it's shown that Zarkon and Lelouch both act extremely recklessly whenever their loved ones are in danger. However, it also shows off their differnces, as while Zarkon outright ignored Alfor's warnings until it was too late, Lelouch ultimately trusted his friends and ended up coming ahead when it mattered because of them.
  • Just Think of the Potential!: Zarkon, Honnerva, and Alfor all initially express this view regarding Quintessence. Alfor eventually changes his mind, though, when it becomes apparent how badly this line of thought is affecting Zarkon and Honnerva.
  • Moment Killer: Just after Allura and Coran finish revealing the origins of Voltron to the Black Knights, Lloyd asks if that makes Zarkon a type of zombie.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: After learning of Zarkon's backstory, Lloyd wonders if the former Black Paladin is a sort of space zombie. Given that Zarkon still retains his intelligence to a degree, and his desire to acquire Voltron, he could be considered a Revenant Zombie, but his nature as a Magic Knight undead Evil Sorcerer makes him closer to a lich.
  • Origins Episode: The chapter serves as this to both Voltron and Zarkon, and also reveals the origins of Haggar.
  • The Power of Trust: Lelouch notes that if he wants to prevent Zarkon from regaining the Black Lion, then he'll need to strengthen his bond with Zen until Zarkon's bond is extinguished. Lelouch also notes that he needs to do this on his own.
  • The Reveal: Only for the readers, but it's finally revealed that Haggar is actually Zarkon's wife, Honnerva.note
