Recap / Clarksons Farm S 1 E 6 Melting

Go To

Jeremy discovers why British farmers are always complaining about the weather. It's mostly because it never does what they want it to do.
— Synopsis

Clarkson sympathizes with the farmers moaning about the weather and recounts his own experiences of working on the farm with unconducive conditions for farming as well as his rapeseed being foraged by flea beetles. Clarkson, refusing to let one of his fields sit there doing nothing, decides to plant it with an assortment of pumpkins, sweet corn and sunflowers and purchases a 1,000 gallon vacuum slurry tank to aid with the watering of these crops.

Clarkson then sets about to fill the tank, by hitching it to his tractor and filling it up using a stream. Kaleb accompanies him to the stream to assist in filling up the tank; as they pass through, Clarkson's tractor catches onto trees and branches and breaks a gate post due to its large size. Once they reach the stream, an hour has passed, so they begin filling up the tank. With the tank full, Kaleb attempts to switch off the vacuum sucking feature but accidentally pushes the wrong button, opening a valve and spraying Clarkson in the process, much to his annoyance. The two descend back on the stream in an attempt to get more water from the stream, resulting in lots of confusion for both of them; Kaleb then suggests he drive while Clarkson does the signaling and they reverse back into the stream successfully and head back to the farm, the trip having taken five hours.

Back at the farm, Clarkson activates his tank and uses that to apply the water to his crops; just a few minutes later Clarkson runs out of water. Exiting from his tractor, Clarkson is in a bit of disbelief that he could run out of water this quickly while Charlie lectures him about the lack of efficacy of his method of using water; Kaleb agrees with Charlie on most counts. Wanting to continue growing his pumpkins, Clarkson asks about when the next meaningful rain would be; Charlie replies saying that the next meaningful rain would not be for another fortnight, to his dismay. Clarkson then requests Kaleb to water the plants manually using a hosepipe while he called it a day.

The next day, Charlie instructs Clarkson to get his Red Tractor Accreditation to allow him to sell his wheat and mutton at full market rate. Dave, the inspector and Clarkson's examiner, soon calls him, while Clarkson attempts to fiddle around with his phone to solve issues with Zoom. Clarkson then takes Dave on a virtual tour around his farm, with Dave bombarding him with questions at any opportunity he gets. With the continued bombarding of questions, Clarkson's phone battery runs low and directly asks Dave if they're going to be fine despite his two issues; Dave affirms that Clarkson's farm will be fine, to which Clarkson celebrates.

With his examination done, Clarkson proceeds to add water to his wetland in his wilding project. Here, Kaleb gives Clarkson a reality check regarding the money he might not have lost if he had not bought the sheep. Getting back to his project, Clarkson tests out a solar-powered water pump he bought; the pump produces a pathetic amount of water. Unsatisfied with the output of his pump, Clarkson purchases a Honda GP200 gasoline generator and large heavy-duty hoses to act as the replacement for his initial pump. Kaleb discovers one of his boots got stuck in the mud and asks Clarkson to help him remove it; Clarkson "attempts" to remove it but gives up quickly, leaving Kaleb to get his boot unstuck himself. As Kaleb attempts to get his boot, Clarkson hoses him down using the solar-powered water pump as "payback" for Kaleb wetting him with the vacuum slurry tank.

After Kaleb retrieves his boot, Clarkson sets out to prove that his contraption using a gasoline generator would be significantly better than his solar-powered pump. Kaleb starts the engine and they soon discover that the generator is too powerful, generating a powerful jet of water which potentially washes seeds and other crops away and proving to be a chore for Clarkson to hold; Clarkson eventually gives up holding the hose, chucks it away and they revert to using the solar-powered pump, which they need to move every 15 minutes or so.

With the wetland project sorted, Clarkson moves to his next project: tree planting, to aid in the United Kingdom's efforts to plant 125 million trees by 2025. Thinking that he would not be around to see these trees fully grown, Clarkson gets a few construction workers to plant fully-grown trees in his stead and set up their irrigation and aeration systems; soon after, twenty fully-grown trees are planted, beneficial to the environment and the farm.

As May came and went, no rain was in sight, and so Clarkson and the others aid each other in getting as much water as possible to the farm. Charlie and Clarkson have a conversation about the state of the crops in the farm, noting that the crops are getting parched due to lack of moisture. Clarkson later voices his concerns about the death of the top soil due to repeated harvesting to Charlie, who affirms his concerns.

After the crop walk, Clarkson heads to the hen houses to figure out why his chickens were being killed; he figures out that the sheep rub their bodies against the hen houses, loosening the catches and letting the chickens escape and thus get killed by foxes. Clarkson theorizes the sheep do this for no good reason, but Kaleb dismisses his theory as they build a fence to stop the problem; Kaleb tells Clarkson that the sheep were doing this as they were hot and itchy, which indicated to Clarkson that it was about time to shear the sheep.

Clarkson contacts Kevin and Ellen to aid in shearing the sheep; Ellen brings a friend along and they begin shearing the sheep. Kevin assigns Clarkson to roll up the fleeces and to remove any feces from the fleeces. Deciding that rolling the fleeces was an unsuitable job, Clarkson attempts to shear the sheep; in his attempt, he gets tackled to the ground and is kicked in the groin by the sheep, to Ellen and Kevin's amusement. To make Clarkson's life easier, Ellen pulls out a sheep for Clarkson, whereupon he begins to shear until the sheep kicks him again. Amazed at what Kevin and Ellen are capable of, he vents his concerns to them; now knowing that shearing is an unsuitable job, Clarkson is put back on fleece rolling duties.

Suspecting that because this enterprise is related to sheep, Clarkson asks Kevin as to what kind of money he would get from a single fleece; he soon discovers he would be making a significant loss through sheep shearing, garnering only £30.80 from all the fleece. Gerald pays a visit to Clarkson to chat soon after, having gotten a haircut. Having finished the shearing, Clarkson, Kevin, Ellen and her friend celebrate the shearing with beer; after this break, Clarkson offers to move the sheep to a new field, but the sheep turn out to be too fast for him. Ellen and Kevin run in to assist herding the sheep as the herd tramples some of Clarkson's crops in the process; eventually they are herded into their new field.

Clarkson closes the gate to the field, reminiscing about earlier times, thinking that sheep would be a cheap and easy way to mow the grass in that field. In hindsight, he realizes that mowing the grass using his tractor would've taken him an hour but decides to keep sheep anyway, and wonders what he was thinking; despite this, he mentions he enjoys their company. Clarkson returns to his newly-planted trees to discover that they are dying despite a constant supply of water, and so were his crops. Clarkson wonders if his crops would be shriveled husks by the time he gets the chance to harvest them in six weeks.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Blatant Lies: Clarkson refuses to help Kaleb get his boot unstuck, claiming it is "stuck fast".
  • Callback: The Grand Tour is directly mentioned.
  • Irony: Clarkson, thinking everything can be solved with his personal mantra of "speed and power", purchases a gasoline generator and hoses to speed the water pumping process up. When the pump turns out to be too powerful for his purposes, he reverts back to using his old pumping system.
Clarkson: You know what's the solution, mate? Internal combustion. It's the solution to everything: speed and power.
(after testing out his gasoline-powered pump)
Clarkson: Right, as I've always said, speed and power doesn't work. Solar power's the answer.
  • Tempting Fate: Clarkson states that he'll soon have pumpkins and sweet corn growing in his wake. Not long after saying that, his tank runs out of water.
