Article of Discussion: Jack Churchill.

Tropes:

  • Beyond the Impossible: Jack Churchill is not a really notable name or figurehead, so it's quite incredible Chris manages to give a quick summary of Jack Churchill when Tom asks at the start of the episode ("some nutter who wielded a claymore during WWII"), which ends up with Chris getting Mystery Biscuits, and Matt to declare the episode to be over quickly.
  • Bowdlerise: Right at the start, Gary uses the phrase "Jack (as in, to lift up) a wartime prime minister", and makes a decent impersonation of Winston Churchill in the process. Tom does note the self-censorship, and was glad he didn't use the other meaning of the word.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Chris scores a point for his Memetic Badass story of Jack Churchill, despite being completely wrong.
  • Everything's Louder with Bagpipes: Matt and Tom really don't like bagpipes:
Gary: Noone tried to shoot the bagpipes?
Tom: I mean, I'll be honest, it's not the first thing you'd - oh, well I dunno...
Gary: Y'see it depends on how anti-bagpipe you are
Matt: ...If I was there, it'd be the first thing I'd go for!
Tom: You've got three bullets, what do you shoot; the bagpipes, three times...
  • Horrifying the Horror: Tom reveals that Jack lived until he was 90, Gary replies with:
Gary: ..Not surprised, who could kill him?! Death just walked away!
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Matt points out how incredible it is Jack Churchill is carrying a longbow, bagpipes and broadsword:
Matt: He's like the people you get in computer games; "It's funny, he could never carry all of these", How is he carrying all of these?!, where did he get that from?!. He was holding a sword a minute ago!
  • Let Me Tell You a Story: Chris's incredibly intricate explanation of how badass Jack Churchill is:
Chris: Oh, I can only presume that he was captured, went along willingly, beat all the guards at chess and poker, drank the camp commandant's rum, then dug his way out with his teeth while the commandant was passed out, chewing on broken glass and spitting it at guards before having relations with the entire female population of the nearest town, lighting a cigarette on the ground, not even using a match, flipping the V and then walking into the camp and say, "What have you f***ers been doing?"
  • Memetic Badass: In-Universe; Everyone in the studio is so impressed by his feats of skill (killing people with a bow and getting caught and escaping twice).
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted, as Tom mentions that Jack Churchill and Winston Churchill are not related.
  • Shout-Out:
    • A few of Winston Churchills' famous quotes are used at the start while his height is being increased.
    • Gary paraphrasing a lyric from Prince's "1999", and claims that Jack Churchill was going party like it was 1399.
  • Take That!: A few slights towards the Scottish (such as the many unexpected uses of bagpipes as an icing bag, and Tom mentioning that, when given three bullets and a gun, they'd shoot the bagpipes three times).
