Recap / Chucky S 2 E 3 Hail Mary

Go To

The kids try to brainwash the captured Chucky, while a stronger second Chucky arrives at Incarnate Lord.

  • Actor Allusion: After getting brainwashed, the heroes' Chucky's new childlike demeanor is reminiscent of Billy Bibbit, his voice-actor Brad Dourif's Academy Award-nominated screen acting debut from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: After being brainwashed by the kids, the Chucky in their custody acts very childlike and polite.
  • And Show It to You: Hulk Chucky does this to Trevor in the most gory way possible.
  • Asshole Victim:
    • Trevor is revealed to be one, blackmailing Lexy when he catches her using drugs, telling her that her mom lost the re-election, and trying to plant more drugs in her room before meeting his (very brutal) end at the hands of Hulk Chucky.
    • Father O'Malley, an apathetic and alcoholic Irish Priest who ignores Nadine's confession and gets strangled by Hulk Chucky.
  • Bottle Episode: Takes place entirely at Incarnate Lord.
  • Brainwashed: Jake and the others attempt to do this with the Chucky they captured in the previous episode. This seems to wind up working a little too well, as Chucky has mentally regressed to the point that he can't remember anything besides his name and his Good Guy phrases.
Lexy: We didn't brainwash him, we brainbleached him.
  • Call-Back:
  • Celebrity Paradox:
    • Darkman (one of the horror films used to brainwash the captured Chucky) featured Jenny Agutter, who played Joanne Simpson in Child's Play 2, in a cameo as a burn doctor, which she filmed simultaneously opposite her role as Joanne around the same year. Notably, the former film's music score by Danny Elfman was conducted by Shirley Walker, who also conducted the latter's score by Graeme Revell (in which its themes were adapted by the show's composer Joseph LoDuca) and had scored the Final Destination films (which the first film features Devon Sawa, who plays Father Bryce in this episode).
    • Another horror film used in the brainwashing, Psycho II featured Meg Tilly (the older sister of Jennifer Tilly, who plays Tiffany and As Herself possessed by Tiffany since Seed of Chucky) and its screenplay was penned by Tom Holland (director and co-writer of the first film in the franchise, Child's Play (1988))
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Trevor meets a brutal end when Hulk Chucky punches a hole through his chest and rips out his heart.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Devon says that the only way to silence Chucky would be to reprogram him, which gives Jake the idea to brainwash him.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The mix tape that Nadine takes out has a label that reads "Property of Eddie Caputo", Chucky's former partner.
  • Guilt by Association: Father Bryce punishes Devon with manual labor for Jake not returning Chucky since by that point, he knows Devon is in a relationship with Jake.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: The Irish Priest Nadine gives confession to slugs down a flask while listening to her.
  • Irish Priest: Incarnate Lord has a Father O'Malley, who refuses to listen to Nadine or give her confession.
  • Kick the Dog: Chucky rubbing it in to Devon how he killed his mother is a real low-blow.
  • Mythology Gag: Chucky briefly pretending to be an Irish Priest towards Nadine could be a nod to the novelizations having identify Charles "Chucky" Lee Ray as an Irish-American.
  • Not So Above It All: Even Lexy can't help but admit that Good Chucky looks cute eating an apple.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Chucky says this verbatim when the kids start their attempts at "reprogramming" by showing him gory scenes from horror movies.
  • Reflective Eyes: The final shot of the episode is Hulk Chucky reflecting in the Good Chucky's eyes as the former approaches him.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Devon storms out of the room when he refuses to believe that Chucky turned good.
  • Shout-Out: The kids strapping Chucky to a chair, clamping his eyes open, and forcing him to watch violent films to desensitize him is taken straight from A Clockwork Orange.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: It seems Father O'Malley does not like listening to Nadine in confessional very much.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Jake and Devon's attempts to torture Chucky into telling them his plan fail since Chucky, being a sadist, is more amused than anything.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: We see Chucky projectile vomit twice during his reprogramming.
