Recap / Chucky S 1 E 5 Little Little Lies

Go To

Having believed that they have finally killed Chucky; Jake, Lexy and Devon attempt to move on with their lives. While allies from Chucky's past have arrived in Hackensack.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Asshole Victim: The man who was tied up by Tiffany and Nica turns out to be an ignorant Dirty Coward who did not listen at all to Nica's Info Dump of how she ended up possessed by Chucky and an Ungrateful Bastard who backhands Nica the moment she helps him untie him that causes Chucky to resume control of her and finish him off. Granted, he did just see Nica murder whoever he was with alongside Tiffany and then watched the two have sex right in front of him. Besides, telling him "I'm possessed by the spirit of a serial killer who also possessed a doll"... well, it doesn't give the guy much reason to believe a word coming out of her mouth.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Throughout the series, it's been hinted that Bree is hiding something from her family. It's implied that she's cheating on Logan, but it's revealed in this episode to not be the case. She's not seeing another man, she's seeing a therapist… because she has stage 4 cancer.
    • In the flashbacks, we see a young adult Charles Lee Ray hitting it off with a blonde exotic dancer at a club, who is heavily implied to be Tiffany. Later we see them pick up a red-headed woman. While the blonde and redhead are making out, Charles pulls out a knife and aims to stab the redhead. The blonde dancer is horrified, while the redhead surprisingly urges him on. Suddenly, he kills the blonde. And the red-headed woman joins him in stabbing her and lets out a familiar hysterical laugh. This is a young Tiffany Valentine.
  • The Bus Came Back: Tiffany and Nica, the latter of whom is possessed by part of Chucky's soul and unwillingly part of a Psycho Lesbian couple with Tiffany.
  • Call-Back:
    • Just like Child's Play 2, Chucky takes the place of a Tommy Good Guy doll. This time, however, he transfers his soul into Tommy rather than physically replacing it.
    • When Nica briefly retakes control of her body and explains who she is to Chucky and Tiffany's captive, there's a quick montage of scenes from Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky.
  • Cassandra Truth: At the meeting, Lexy tells Junior everything about Chucky, and he thinks she's lying. Of course Lexy only did this to prove to Jake and Devon that Junior was never going to believe it.
  • Cat Scare: Lexy is keeping Chucky trapped in a trash can until Jake and Devon arrive. Once she takes off the lid, a skunk jumps out of the can, scaring them.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Detective Evans looks hardly pleased when she sees Devon holding hands with Jake, mostly because she had previously told Devon to stay away from Jake since she thinks he's responsible for the recent murders.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: As Mayor Cross invites the school principal to say a few words at the town hall meeting, the opening chords of "Heads Will Roll" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs begin to play. Sure enough, the principal's head gets tossed onstage a few seconds later.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The Reveal that the show takes places 20 Minutes into the Past (just weeks after Cult of Chucky) is hinted at by Junior trying to make conversation about Westworld, whose first season had only come out the previous year.
    • The kids celebrate over seemingly killing Chucky for good... yet fans of the movies will notice the doll they smashed isn't bleeding.
  • Help Mistaken for Attack: Once freed from Chucky's possession, Nica tries to free his most recent captive in the same room with her - only for the captive to knock her down thinking she's still a threat only to allow Chucky to re-possess Nica by doing so leading to the trope below.
  • He Knows Too Much: The copy of Chucky possessing Nica kills his and Tiffany's captive to keep him from mentioning to Tiffany about Nica briefly regaining control of her body.
  • Hope Spot: Jake, Devon, and Lexy destroy Chucky's Good Guy doll body and believe that he's finally dead. But at the end of the episode, the principal is decapitated and it's revealed that Chucky transferred his soul into Caroline's new Good Guy doll.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After arguing with his wife over her putting her priorities as mayor over being a good mother, Nathan grabs the wine bottle and leaves.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Junior is the only one of the four teens unaware of Chucky. Jake thinks they should tell him the truth, but Lexy refuses not only because he won't believe them, but also because she doesn't want him involved.
  • Off with His Head!: The episode ends with the principal's head rolling out onto the stage, and Chucky unveiling her decapitated body from behind the curtain.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Jake and Devon kiss and become a couple after believing they destroyed Chucky.
  • The Reveal:
  • Screaming at Squick: This is Caroline's reaction when she sees Chucky's burned disfigured face.
  • Secretly Dying: Bree has stage 4 cancer and has been hiding it from her family.
  • Sleazy Politician: Mayor Cross intends to stick the Hackensack taxpayers with the bill for repairing her house for the damage caused by a fire that her own daughter caused.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: When Nica momentarily regains control of her body, she talks to the man Chucky and Tiffany kidnapped and unties one of his arms to rescue him. How does he thank her? He punches her and tries to free his other arm before Chucky regains control and kills him. Understandable, however, as the guy could have thought that Nica was insane or was trying to deceive him.
  • Waking Non Sequitur: After waking up from her coma, the first thing Caroline says is "I like to be hugged".
