Recap / Chuck S 3 E 17 Chuck Vs The Living Dead

Go To

Stephen: Charles, there's something I never told you. The Intersect - it can have a negative impact on the brain.
Chuck: Hold... hold on. What? You - you knew? You knew, and you didn't tell me?
Stephen: I didn't think I had to tell you. You didn't tell me you downloaded the new one!

After his Intersect dream, Chuck investigates the possibility of Shaw being alive, with Morgan's help. Ring agent Justin persuades Ellie to reach out to her father, but instead of giving her his address, he decides to visit. Realising Chuck is still a spy, Stephen is freaked out that the Intersect is damaging Chuck's brain and goes back to his cabin, but not before Ellie slips a tracker on him for Justin.

Nervous about Shaw, Chuck asks Casey to keep an eye on Ellie, not realising that Ellie's been told that Casey's a traitor. Following her, Casey overhears Ellie leaving a message for Justin that sounds like she's having an affair.

Ring agents follow Stephen, but so do Chuck and Sarah. A fight ensues, in which the Ring agents are revealed to be after a device called the Governor. Back at Chuck's place, Stephen reveals what the Governor is: a device to prevent the dangerous side effects of long-term Intersect use. He promises to make one for Chuck, so he can continue to use the Intersect safely.

Casey checks Ellie and Awesome's apartment for evidence of what she's up to, but Ellie comes home early and hears him moving around. On the phone, Justin tells her to open the speaker he gave her earlier: inside is a gun. Ellie baulks at using it, instead hitting Casey with a frying pan and running away.

The gang finally conclude that Shaw is dead after all. But in a secret facility, someone activates and downloads an Intersect. Someone who looks awfully familiar...

Trope Flash:

  • Frying Pan of Doom: Ellie is a dangerous woman with a pan, as Casey learns the hard way.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: When a Ring mook throws a knife at Chuck, Sarah knocks it away mid-flight by throwing an axe.
Stephen: Does she have the Intersect too?
Chuck: No dad. That's all her. Hi, honey!
  • Improvised Weapon: When the Ring agents have them captured at the cabin, Chuck breaks the arms off his chair to use as clubs. During the fight, Stephen clobbers a guy with a lump of firewood.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Casey shadows Ellie and overhears her leaving a message for Justin that sounds like she's having an affair.
  • Mcguffin: The Ring wants Stephen so he can give them the Governor, a device that prevents the Intersect overload that Chuck is suffering from.
  • Never Found the Body: Lampshaded by Morgan regarding Shaw. Most of the episode is dedicated to figuring out if he's still alive.
Morgan: You dreamt Shaw was alive? Chuck, you saw him die, though. You checked for a pulse, right?
Chuck: Well, he fell into a river.
Morgan: "He fell into a river." Of course he's alive! Haven't you ever seen a John Carpenter movie?
  • Wham Episode: Shaw is still alive, and now he has an Intersect.
  • Xanatos Gambit: A likely explanation for Ring agent Justin giving Ellie a gun to use on Casey. Either Ellie kills Casey or Casey kills Ellie; either way, Chuck has lost someone he loves and his Intersect will likely not work. Fortunately, Ellie can't bring herself to use the gun and clobbers Casey with a frying pan instead.
