Recap / Chuck S 2 E 18 Chuck Vs The Broken Heart

Go To

General Beckman: I wanted a private word with you. Pardon the intrusion.
Chuck: On this moment or my life in general?

General Beckman sends a new agent to assess Sarah's relationship with Chuck. Morgan, Jeff, and Lester use any and all means to crash Awesome's bachelor party.

Trope Flash:

  • Actor Allusion: Tricia Helfer plays Agent Alex Forrest, who's been sent in to assess whether Sarah's feelings for Chuck are compromising the mission. Chuck describes the situation as Sarah being replaced with "some kind of soulless replica," referencing Helfer's role as Number Six in Battlestar Galactica (2003).
  • The Bro Code: Jeff and Lester ignore Morgan's warning not to take photos at the bachelor party. Ellie sees the photos, which include a drunk Awesome with a stripper (actually a drugged Awesome with Agent Forest). She's angry and hurt, first with Awesome for his apparent infidelity but also Chuck for apparently covering for him (actually just trying to limit the damage done to his loved ones by the mission).
Chuck: Nothing happened at the bachelor party. He didn't do anything. I swear!
Ellie: Chuck, I saw the photos, okay? I'm sorry, I know you're just trying to protect him. Bro code or whatever. But, Chuck, I'm your sister! You're supposed to protect me.
  • Cliffhanger: Sarah finds Chuck's father's address. They go together to meet him, and the episode ends just as the door opens.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Morgan, Jeff and Lester plead with Chuck to get them into the bachelor party, Jeff and Lester shamefacedly admit they've never been to one before. It's played as if they're admitting to still being virgins.
  • Gene Hunt: Early in the episode, it's established that Chuck's search for his and Ellie's father is not going well. He appeals to Sarah to use CIA databases to help, which she does despite it being, y'know, illegal. The episode ends with them going to his trailer.
  • Mushroom Samba: When Chuck is trapped in a bank vault with Dr. Zamir who is trying to kill him, during the fight a gas canister of nitrous oxide is knocked over. Chuck and his assailant are both dosed and spend most of the rest of the episode giggling on the floor.
    Dr. Zamir: You lie.
Chuck: I'm totally serious. [Beat] Ladybugs can't all be ladies! How would we get little ones?
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • When a dismissed Sarah sneaks into Chuck's apartment to leave a note with his father's address, she sees his phone abandoned on the bed and immediately realises something is wrong, because Chuck would have his phone with him. In fact he's been kidnapped by the terrorists the team planted a bug in earlier that day, and without Sarah's interference he would have been dead before anyone knew he was missing. This contrasts her firmly against Agent Forest, to whom a phone is just a phone.
    • After Chuck is rescued, he protests to General Beckman about Sarah being replaced, citing the above situation and pointing out that his handler's main job is to keep him alive. Sarah tries to stop him, but to everyone's shock, Casey of all people urges Chuck to keep talking. It effectively underlines the seriousness of what happened: someone vital to the country's security was almost killed while his handlers cleaned their guns.
    Sarah: Chuck, it's alright...
Casey: No, it's not. Let him finish.
  • Scary Surprise Party: The episode opens with masked assailants seizing Chuck outside his apartment. They're stopped by an armed Casey, revealing them to be... Morgan, Jeff and Lester, in an ill-conceived attempt to prove their worthiness to be included in Awesome's bachelor party. Chuck is justifiably beside himself and screams at them that they're not invited (already; he's not disinviting them), but when the team need Awesome's hospital pass to access the pacemaker they plan to bug, Chuck calls the guys in to kidnap Awesome for an impromptu party where Chuck plans to get him drunk and take the card rather than have Agent Forest shoot him with a tranq gun.
  • Seduction-Proof Marriage: Agent Forest tries to get Awesome's key card by posing as a stripper for his bachelor party. But Awesome is too faithful to Ellie for that to work, so she tranqs him instead.
Agent Forest: I guess true love is alive and well and living in the Valley. [Pow]
  • Shout-Out:
    • Agent Alex Forest is named after Glenn Close's character in Fatal Attraction.
    • Terrorist Ahmad checks into hospital under the name Harry Lime.
    • When Chuck and Agent Forest meet Dr. Zamir while undercover as medical staff, the "Doctor... Doctor... Doctor..." routine from Spies Like Us is homaged.
