Go To

On his third birthday, Wyatt turns three toys (a soldier, a cowboy and an Indian) into people. Billie tortures a possessor demon, who escapes and vows revenge. A parolee of Henry's flips out after being denied a loan and takes everyone in the bank hostage, including Paige and Billie.

Tropes

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Phoebe says the way the transformed toys play with the kids is genuine entertainment.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: Henry unknowingly does this to Billie, while trying to talk down Nick.
Henry: Getting even? It's not the answer. Revenge makes you do things that you're gonna regret, get hurt.
  • Big "OMG!": Phoebe in response to Wyatt making three toys into real people.
  • Bond One-Liner: Three demons are about to finish off Billie, but we learn it's really Paige in a glamour disguise when she redirects the energy balls with orbing to kill all three of them.
    "Billie": Surprise!
  • Break the Haughty: Billie was quite flippant about her constant demon torturing, even brushing off Piper scolding her obsession. One of her victims responds by possessing Nick, which makes the hostage situation worse and puts Henry's life in further danger. It's all a rather humbling experience for Billie.
  • Brutally Honest: Nick wants Henry to get to a doctor, but he's trying to wait it out, until he can get the promised helicopter to safety. Paige berates him for that, though she later looks apologetic over how far she took it.
    Nick: I didn't shoot him.
Paige: You're right! You're the one that should've been shot!
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Piper assures Wyatt that Leo is gone for a very brave reason and that he will be back one day. In the meantime, she tells Wyatt that Leo's absence is not his or anyone else's fault.
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": After everything else involving the other cop firing his gun, Paige suddenly realizes that Henry hasn't gotten up off the floor yet.
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: After possessing Nick, Rohtul mocks Billie for thinking there would be no consequences for her brazen actions as of late.
Rohtul: Did you really think that your vindictive rampage through the Underworld would go unpunished, that we would just let it keep happening?
  • Disappeared Dad: Deconstructed. The toys are partly an outgrowth of Wyatt's mind. They search for a missing Leo, while expressing frustration and guilt over him seemingly breaking his promise to always be there.
  • Dramatic Irony: In the face of "Nick" changing up his demands for leaving last-minute, a confused Lt. Sanchez remarks it's like he's an entirely different person now.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Xamo questions going after Billie, due to her association with the Charmed Ones.
    • Creo knows who is responsible for Billie's sister being abducted, and he says challenging them is as deadly as facing the Charmed Ones.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Lt. Sanchez can't explain Nick's change of behavior, saying it's like he's a completely different person. Piper overhears this and gets a good idea what it could mean.
  • Foreshadowing: Creo explains that he knows more about Christy's abduction than the other demons do. He survives the episode and will return later in the season to expand on this.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Henry almost manages to talk Nick down, but one of the people in the bank turns out to be a cop with a gun. That guy taking what he thought was the best shot leaves Nick even more unhinged and Henry with a deadly wound.
    • Nick's son manages to talk some sense into him. Just as Paige is about to be handed the gun, Rohtul possesses Nick.
  • Ironic Echo: Poised to finish off Rohtul, Billie asks him, "Where were we?" After he's dead, Paige asks Billie the same thing, as a prelude to the sisters lecturing her about her recent behavior.
  • It's All My Fault: Wyatt doesn't understand why Leo is gone and blames himself.
  • Life Isn't Fair: Nick desperately bemoans how he risked his life every day in Iraq, only to be disrespected after getting back stateside.
    Nick: It's not right.
  • Loophole Abuse: Paige and Billie can't use their powers openly, during a hostage situation. Creo points out the same rule applies to demons like themselves. Rohtul demonstrates nothing can stop him from possessing Nick under the radar and manipulating the situation for the demons' benefit.
  • Love Is a Weakness: Goading her to expose herself as a witch, Rohtul needles Paige about her obvious love for Henry and how she'll never forgive herself if he dies. He thinks this is why he'll win out, but The Power of Love is what activates Paige's healing powers.
  • Masquerade: Creo points out that both sides made strict rules about maintaining the masquerade, such as not using powers in front of so many mortal witnesses. Rohtul thinks to possess Nick, leaving him free to do as he pleases in plain sight and try to force the witches to expose only themselves.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Averted. Paige's healing power kicks in when it's needed most, but it's already been demonstrated with Wyatt that a half-witch/half-Whitelighter can have healing powers.
  • Not Me This Time: Phoebe insists that she wasn't the one who transformed the three toys, though Piper has a good idea who gave Wyatt the idea in the first place.
  • Pet the Dog: An Elder appears to Piper in The Teaser to check up on her and assure her that the bargain with the Angel of Destiny will be honored.
  • Pie in the Face: Wyatt orbs a birthday cake into the face of the Elder who visits the Manor during the cold open. For added hilarity it happens right after the Elder comments on what a good boy Wyatt is.
  • The Power of Love: Paige accepting that she loves Henry when it looks like she's about to lose him allows her to finally use Whitelighter healing without needing Leo's help.
  • The Promise: Leo had previously promised Wyatt that he would always be there for him. Leo's disappearance has left Wyatt feeling cheated and like he did something wrong.
  • Public Secret Message: Piper was tasked with getting Nick's son to the cops at the bank. After Nick is possessed by Rohtul, Paige makes some specific hand motions at the security cameras in the hopes Piper is still nearby and seeing the feed. Piper immediately picks up on it and goes to get Phoebe.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After getting rejected for a bank loan, Nick starts shouting and storms out about how unfair this all is. He then plows his car through the front door, takes everyone hostage, and demands the money. He later talks about all the crap he had to put up with since coming home from Iraq, so getting turned down for the loan was the last straw.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Lt. Sanchez oversees the hostage negotiations. He tries to keep a handle on things, though after Henry is shot, he promises to stop being reasonable if the worst happens.
  • Revenge: None of the demons like the idea of Billie hounding them, but Rohtul in particular wants payback for being tortured. He ultimately opts to possess Nick and force her to expose her powers to the wider world, telling his fellows that revenge comes in all forms. When that plan washes out, he tries to take Billie alone as a hostage, but Paige and Billie pulled a little switcheroo to allow for some orbing trickery.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Rohtul was only able to escape torture and death because Piper was yelling at Billie for her recent behavior. Rather than count his blessings and stay away, he spends the entire episode chomping at the bit for revenge, but his efforts ultimately leave him vanquished.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: A lot of Nick's struggles stem not from the stigma of serving jailtime, but from what he experienced over in Iraq and the lousy reception he received upon returning home.
  • Stepford Smiler: Downplayed. Wyatt is clearly depressed over Leo being gone, but he at worst just looks sullen and never really expresses himself. He even engages in playful behavior some of the time. Phoebe casts a spell on his teddy bear that voices what he's really feeling. Wyatt would rather bring his other toys to life than talk about this.
Teddy bear: I'm so sad. I wanna cry all the time.
Phoebe: No. Why are you sad, bear?
Teddy bear: [to Wyatt] You wanna tell her or should I?
  • This Cannot Be!:
    • Rohtul over Paige using Whitelighter healing powers to save Henry.
    • Rohtul again after "Billie" demonstrates orbing power. Paige gladly reveals the trick she pulled on him.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Paige's healing power is triggered when she has to save Henry without being exposed after he's shot.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Billie has been on a tear abducting demons, torturing them for information, and finishing them off. The demons' assorted fellows, however, are sick of this constant grief and want it stopped. Rohtul prevents the hostage situation from being over sooner in the hopes of getting revenge.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Piper towards Billie for torturing a demon in the attic right before a child's birthday party starts. It being a possessor demon makes Piper call out her recklessness even more.
  • You Are Not Alone: Phoebe tells Wyatt he's not the only one sad about Leo being gone and that he doesn't have to carry the load by himself.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Piper to Phoebe, after picking up on the "party performers" being the work of magic.
