Recap / Castle S 8 E 9 Tone Death

Go To

  • The Atoner: Linda Weinberg crashes a stolen car while driving drunk and flees the scene, letting her passenger, Robyn, take the blame for the crash. However, she also applies a tourniquet to Robyn's leg to keep her from bleeding to death before running away. While Robyn is in jail, Linda starts a non-profit charity to help ex-cons, specifically to try and help Robyn improve her life, in the hope it would make up for what Linda did to her.
  • Brick Joke: To keep up appearances of being separated, Castle and Beckett claim to Ryan and Esposito that they're seeing other people. When Beckett visits Castle's apartment at the end of the episode, she introduces herself as Svetlana, Castle's supposed new lover, while Castle has a stethoscope on like the doctor that Beckett is allegedly seeing.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Ryan and Esposito accuse Castle of cheating after witnessing him and Beckett "fighting." Castle panics and blurts out that he's seeing a model named Svetlana. When the duo inform Beckett, she's confused but plays along by pretending she's seeing a doctor named Livingstone. Naturally this leads them to believe that the marriage is over for real and they offer their support to their captain for this turn of events.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Castle and Beckett's fake fights are convincing enough that Ryan and Esposito think the marriage is over.
  • I Didn't Mean to Kill Him: The murderer, Linda Weinberg's husband, confesses to pushing Robyn during an argument and insists it was an accident that she hit her head and died.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Castle and Beckett both get out of awkward conversations with Ryan and Esposito about their relationship by claiming to have a date with their supposed new partners.
  • Jerkass: The judge of the a capella competition is a stuffy, judgmental man who is resentful about allowing ex-cons to perform and takes a bribe to disqualify them.
  • Secret Relationship: Castle and Beckett have gotten back together but have to publicly pretend they're still separated, going so far as to stage fights and pretend they're seeing other people.
  • Spotting the Thread: When Robyn saw her introductory video, she became suspicious when a man claims that he saved her life in the accident where she was arrested by making a tourniquet with her scarf. Problem was, she wasn't wearing a scarf and it was out of her price range in any event. After talking to the man who claimed to save her life, she traced the scarf back to Linda and planned to confront her for her role in the accident. However, Linda's husband found out, he and Robyn got into an argument, and when he pushed her, she fell, hit her head, and died.
