  • Bald of Evil: Unseelie Jack's victim who he'd left alive describes him as having a shaved head.
  • Boom, Headshot!: The opening raid in the forest has most of the fae killed with unlikely headshots from afar.
  • Climbing Climax: Philo chases the serial killer across the roofs of the town until it comes to a confrontation and suicide by the baddie.
  • Da Chief: Philo gets sent home by the chief of police after he requests surveillance of one of their own.
  • Drowning Pit: The fae are trapped below deck when the water rushes in. note
  • Empathy Doll Shot: Among the wreckage of the Deliverance we briefly see a child's stuffed doll being tossed about by the tide.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • Vignette's Big Damn Heroes moment of saving a fae from a werewolf in the forest establishes her as an Action Girl.
    • Philo's first appearance threatening a fellow copper with a butcher's knife establishes him as a Hard Boiled Detective.
  • Feet-First Introduction: Agreus is introduced with his hoofs in focus.
  • Going by the Matchbook: Vignette finds the Tetterby Hotel in the Burgue via a matchbook with its name on it.
  • Important Haircut: In disdain Vignette chops off her tail that reminded her of Philo after learning that he left her thinking he was dead.
  • Internal Reveal: Vignette learns that Philo is still alive.
  • Match Cut: A scene transition from Philo's face on a photo floating in the sea to him sitting in a tram at the Burgue.
  • Mistaken for Servant: Imogen confuses Agreus with a servant on their first encounter.
  • Motive Rant: The serial killer delivers one to Philo before throwing himself off the roof.
  • Not Worth Killing: Vignette's reasoning when deciding to let Philo live.
  • Precious Photo: The daguerreotype of Philo that Vignette keeps in her book.
  • Scream Discretion Shot: The last we hear of Aisling is her screaming coming from in the sewers.
  • Serial Killer: Philo is on the trail of "Unseelie Jack," a man who has been beating Fae to death with a hammer.
  • Shipwreck Start: Vignette gets to the Burgue by means of her escaping the Pact-occupied Tirnanoc among a shipload of refugees, only for the ship to founder in a storm with Vignette the Sole Survivor. This leads Ezra Spurnrose, an investor in the lost ship, to force her into Indentured Servitude as a maid to recoup a bit of his investment.
  • A Sinister Clue: Philo is able to determine from the injuries on Unseelie Jack's victims that the perpetrator was left-handed.
  • Slain in Their Sleep: What Vignette attempts with Philo.
  • Sole Survivor: Vignette is the only survivor of both the raid in the forest as well as the shipwreck that killed both humans and Fae by the masses.
  • Sword over Head: Vignette is about to cut Philo's throat but can't bring herself to go through with it, especially after he dares her to.
  • Take a Moment to Catch Your Death: The fae Vignette saves from a werewolf gets promptly shot by a Pact soldier.
  • Tattooed Crook: The incriminating detail which allows Philo to identify Unseelie Jack is the tattoo of a snake on his forearm.
  • Think Nothing of It: Vignette's response when a fae thanks for arranging for the passage.
  • Wall Bang Her: Portia and Phila have sex up against (and on) her dresser.
  • Woman Scorned: Vignette doesn't take lightly to what Philo did and threatens to kill him with a knife.
  • Zero-G Spot: Jonah engages in something similar with Tourmaline, who's a Faerie. As the two have sex, she bats her wings to lift both of them off the bed. This experience seems to be a part of the appeal Faerie prostitutes have, since they also fly down to be viewed by potential clients.
