Recap / Cardcaptor Sakura Sakuras Heart Racing First Date

Go To

Sakura is excited during a field trip to the aquarium, because there are penguins! During the show, she learns two things: that her brother is working with the penguins, and that a Clow Card is hiding in the aquarium.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: In the Nelvana dub, Sakura knows right away that the the whirlpool that nearly drowned an aquarium worker wasn't due to a drain coming unplugged like the staff said because the water level didn't go down. But she has to take another trip to the aquarium before she even considers that it's a Clow Card.
  • Badass Bystander: Yukito saves Sakura from drowning by grabbing an axe and cutting a door open for the water to drain.
  • Badass in Distress: Watery during Sakura's second trip to the aquarium breaks the glass and traps her leg in a whirlpool under water.
  • Compliment Backfire: After mishearing Sakura and thinking she, not a penguin drowned at the aquarium, Kero mentions that swimming is one of the few things Sakura is good at. Sakura gets mad and refuses to feed him pancakes.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Sakura has this reaction whenever penguins are nearby.
  • Food Porn: Sakura makes pancakes for herself, Kero, and Yukito. Kero compliments her on how delicious they are, and Toya steals them.
  • Foreshadowing: Toya keeps complaining about how he's assigned to work in the freezers. Eventually, Yukito commenting on it gives Sakura her "Eureka!" Moment on how to catch the card.
  • Guile Hero: Since her cards aren't strong enough to take on Watery in a direct flight, Sakura tricks it into flying into the aquarium freezers, and sets Windy on it.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Invoked by Kero, who says that Watery is this. He says Sakura can't catch the card with just Windy, Shadow and Fly.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Yukito asks Sakura for pancakes after seeing that she's making some. After delivering them to Yukito, Sakura squeezes the air out of Kero while he wants to talk to her about catching Watery.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!":
    • Sakura and her class when the penguin and its trainer get caught by a whirlpool.
    • All the patrons at the aquarium does this when one of the tanks break and submerges the restaurant.
  • Nightmare Face: Watery's true form makes this face after Sakura lures it into the freezers.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Sakura when she trips after running into Yukito. Then she blushes.
    • Tomoyo and Kero after Sakura asks what they're doing at the aquarium, since they were spying on her.
    • Watery when she starts to freeze.
  • Say My Name: Tomoyo calls out Sakura's name when Watery nearly drowns the latter at the aquarium
  • Shipper on Deck: While he thinks Sakura's infatuation is a tad ridiculous, Kero helps Tomoyo spy on Sakura during her date with Yukito.
  • Ship Tease: At least for Sakura, she is excited that she and Yukito are going out on a date.
  • Skewed Priorities: Subverted. At first, when Sakura is enamored of Yukito, she says he's more important than the cards. Then Kero tells her that if she doesn't catch it, then the penguins will still be in danger. That snaps her out of it immediately.
  • Tech Marches On: Tomoyo gives Sakura cell phones so that the three of them can stay in contact.
  • Weirdness Censor: The aquarium explains that a drain caught the penguin and its trainer. Kero and Sakura agree that it couldn't have been the drain, since it wouldn't be strong enough. Therefore it has to be a Clow Card.
