Recap / Captain Planet and the Planeteers S5 E7 "No Place Like Home"

Go To

Dr. Blight manages to take away Gaia's powers and strand her among the homeless, where a kind woman named Marge takes her under her wing and shows her the ropes of surviving on the streets. It's up to the Planeteers and Captain Planet, who as a result gets stuck after being summoned, to find Gaia and bring her back to Hope Island before dawn – or they all will remain powerless forever.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Body Double: In the climax, Marge wraps herself in Gaia's cloak to trick Dr. Blight into chasing her, allowing Gaia to reach Hope Island.
  • Brought Down to Normal:
    • When Dr. Blight uses an Energy Weapon on her, Gaia loses her powers and immortality.
    • Gaia's absence also interferes with the Heart Ring's psychic powers and causes the Captain to be trapped outside the rings without his powers.
  • Cardboard Box Home: While trying to contact Gaia, Ma-Ti gets a vision of a place made of "paper houses". Initially, the Planeteers and Captain Planet think it might have something to do with the local Chinatown, due to Gi telling them of rice paper walls in some Asian countries. Eventually, however, Wheeler spots several homeless people putting new layers of paper and cardboard over their makeshift houses damaged by the rain. This is what sets the team on the right track to find Gaia.
  • Celestial Deadline: The only way Gaia can regain her powers and immortality is to get back to Hope Island by sunrise. Of course, Blight doesn't plan to make it easy...
  • Crazy Homeless People: The first homeless person that Gaia encounters is an old man believing himself to be William Shakespeare (and talking in Flowery Elizabethan English). In a later scene, when Captain Planet and the Planeteers talk to an employee of the homeless shelter, we learn of two other delusional men, each thinking he's the Red Baron.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Gaia, enraged by the suffering of a coyote family, leaves Hope Island to personally help said animals. It most probably doesn't even occur to her that by doing so, she makes herself an easy target for the Eco-Villains – in this case, for Dr. Blight.
  • Fertile Feet: Gaia turns a barren construction site into a beautiful meadow by simply walking through it.
  • Fish out of Water: After Dr. Blight takes away her powers, Gaia wanders into a city and finds herself among homeless people. Being used to Hope Island's perfect living conditions – like lush plant life, pure air or clean waters teeming with all kinds of aquatic creatures – she has serious trouble adjusting to her new situation. Fortunately, a woman named Marge takes her under her wing.
  • Group Hug: The Planeteers do this to Gaia two times – first when they find her, and second when they're all safely back on Hope Island.
  • Literal Surveillance Bug: Blight uses those to spy on the Planeteers. She has the bugs even in places like the Crystal Chamber or the Geo-Cruiser.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: One of Gaia's sandals breaks and she leaves it behind. The Planeteers later find it.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Dr. Blight calls Hope Island "Dope Island" at one point.
  • Mistaken for Insane: Marge clearly doesn't believe Gaia claiming she's the Spirit of Earth (not right away, at least), but decides to humor her in this regard, rather than ridicule her. Justified, because Marge is already used to dealing with "Bard", who thinks he's Shakespeare. Also lampshaded, since Gaia admits that her claims do sound crazy.
Gaia: I've got to get home.
    Marge: Where's home, honey?
Gaia: Hope Island. If I don't get back, the whole planet is in jeopardy.
Marge: Yeah, being homeless makes you feel like your world is crumbling.
Gaia: I... I guess it sounds crazy, but... I don't think I'm crazy.
  • Mundane Luxury: Gaia learns first-hand (and hard way) how many essential things can be taken for granted.
Gaia: You don't know how lucky you are, until you lose everything.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: The instant Blight zaps Gaia with her ray gun, it Smash Cuts to Ma-Ti shouting, "Gaia!" and telling the others she's in danger.
  • Poverty Food: When it comes to eating, Marge isn't picky. She knows the taste of dog food, and offers Gaia a partially eaten burger found in a trashcan. Gaia, however, objects to such a meal with not entirely concealed disgust.
  • Ray Gun: This is what Dr. Blight uses to deprive Gaia of her powers.
  • Series Continuity Error: In "A Twist of Fate", Gaia seems to understand the struggle of the poor and homeless people, and even explains it to Wheeler. In this episode, it's her who needs to learn this lesson.
  • Villains Want Mercy: After Captain Planet punches a hole in her aircraft, Dr. Blight is standing on one of its wings, until it sinks completely, leaving her stranded in the ocean, rather far from the shore, only clinging to MAL's floating monitor. Cap does save them, though.
    Blight: Hey! What about me?!
    MAL: She means us!
Captain Planet: Now, I've got a deal for you!
  • Wham Shot: Captain Planet being unable to split apart into the rings, forcing him to stick around longer than he usually does, also without his powers.
  • Would Hit a Girl: At one point, Gaia and Marge are approached by three aggressive men who attempt to beat them up and call the homeless people "trash". The two manage to fight off their attackers and flee, but soon run into them again. Fortunately, at this very time, Captain Planet and the Planeteers arrive and chase the thugs off.
