Recap / Captain Planet And The Planeteers S 1 E 9 Tree Of Life

Go To

Dr. Blight chops down a sacred tree and uses its sap to become even more powerful than Captain Planet, then plans to destroy him and the ancient redwood forests.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Acid Pool: After imprisoning the Planeteers, Dr. Blight digs a ditch around their enclosure, which she fills with an industrial chemical that she describes as very harsh on skin. They can't even summon Captain Planet until Dr. Blight releases them because of the massive amounts of pollution in the area.
  • Hope Sprouts Eternal: At the end, Kwame laments that the tree is gone, even though the forest at large is safe. However, Captain Planet waters the tree stump, producing a sprout.
  • I Lied: Dr. Blight gets one of the locals to sell her the rights to the tree, promising him a large reward in return. After cutting the tree down, she has her mecha-lumberjack imprison him with the Planeteers.
  • Percussive Pickpocket: When Dr. Blight starts getting the upper hand on Captain Planet, Wheeler and Kwame tackle her. She throws them off easily, but when she wants to refuel on the super sap, she finds that Wheeler picked her pocket. One spray of sap later, Captain Planet retakes the upper hand.
  • Protest by Obstruction: The older man stands in front of the tree as the robojacks encroach on it to cut it down. His son has to pull him out of the way.
  • Superpowers For A Day: The normally non-powered Dr. Blight gets Flying Brick powers from the sap of an old tree.
  • Tempting Fate: When MAL catches Wheeler in Blight's hideout.
MAL: You are a Planeteer, and you're in big trouble!
Wheeler: Right. And what're you gonna do? Throw spears at me?
MAL: Not a bad idea! (shoots laser spears at Wheeler)
Wheeler: (dodges) WHOA! Me and my big mouth!
  • Villain Ball: After cutting down the tree, Dr. Blight refuses to pay the local she made a deal with, instead ordering her robojack to imprison him with the Planeteers. This provokes a Heel–Face Turn.
  • We Can Rule Together: After capturing Captain Planet, Dr. Blight tries to sway him into joining her in wreaking havoc across the earth. Naturally, he refuses. Also naturally, she responds with attempted murder.
